It's a combination of factors.

One is that historically coyotes were not apex predators and at a severe disadvantage when matched against a bear, wolf, mountain lion, or armed human. So they had a fear of apex predators and always sought to avoid rather than confront them. In areas where humans are no longer armed and don't behave like an apex predators, and the other apex predators have been extirpated, the coyote is now the apex predator, and is starting to act like one.

Another is that animals identify a predator by smell. When you eat red meat, you give off a predator body odor. Non-apex predators and prey animals know this smell and run from it. When apex predators, on the other hand, smell this predator body odor, they smell competition and aggressively defend their territory. Vegans do not have the predator body odor, making them smell like prey animals. I think this also explains mountain lion attacks in California.

Where I encounter coyotes, there is an abundance of prey animals, especially rabbits and voles, and coyotes never go hungry. They don't ever have any reason to see humans as a food source. (plus, humans are usually meat eaters, and usually armed and shoot coyotes on sight) In Southern California, there is not such an abundance of prey animals and those that are there are more cautious and more difficult to catch, so coyotes seek other food sources.
Thank you. That makes sense . . . especially the part about strict vegetarians smelling like prey.

I have been a vegetarian on and off on several occasions in my life, and my body odor does change when I give up meat. I've noticed this in my vegetarian girlfriends as well, but this point about smelling like prey to a carnivorous animal never occurred to me.

Brought my plants in for the winter. We've had so much rain, two of them were very heavy. I'll have to move them again when we put up Christmas tree.

What did you bring in for winter Robin? Had my hubby put my lemon trees in the greenhouse and some blueberry bushes I had in large containers. I have too many large plants on our porches and decks to take indoors unfortunately. This year I put autumn ferns in with other summer flowering plants so at least i should have those still alive come next spring!

Wow! Did not know that. Pretty amazing actually!

Californians are attacked because of their political views, their arrogance and for changing the place they move to in to where they left. I grew up in Oregon. It was a conservative state until the Californian infestation. Eastern Oregon is still pretty conservative but there's enough socialists in Portland and the Willamette Valley to dictate socialist policy over the whole state.
I've never met a conservative Californian yet.

Oh they are there…just not as loud and arrogant as the ones always on the news. I worked for the CSU system for some years and there were even some there! My kids were raised mostly in Cali and every one of them are Conservative. Of course it is because of my husband and I keeping their heads on straight. I would never live there again!! Felt like God was punishing me for 10 years!

Everyone needs to spend at least a day in the Sequoias though! So very amazing. They can keep their dirty beaches, cold water and nasty kelp. SF used to be kind of cool, but it is a filthy, human feces filled hazard now. My husband retired from a company based there and he refused to go the last two years before retirement. He’d send one of the directors or VPs who reported to him in his place.

They are house plants..... Definbacia (?) I know that is misspelled, a ficus and Wondering Jew.

It's good that you're relocating, then.

I guess I don't understand a lot of the antipathy towatd coyotes, though. I realize that they can spread disease, they can kill livestock and small pets . . . but I've also seen them eating gophers and rats.

I like hearing them howl and yip when I turn in at night, and they seem like interesting animals.

From what I've seen, they also seem blindingly intelligent, as far as animals go.
I dont pretend to be an expert on coyotes, but I have spent over 50 years trapping them and have lived my whole life around them. We had some coyotes just outside our bedroom window this morning.
Coyotes are extremely intelligent critters, and also the hardest to trap next to wolves. I greatly admire the coyote.
We've lost some calves to coyotes every year, but its pretty tough for a coyote to take down a healthy cow. In populated areas most calves and cows are killed by free roaming dogs, yes the family pet, but coyotes get the blame anyway. I enjoy coyotes, in fact i seldom trap coyotes on my own land, and I never trap or shoot a coyote when the fur isn't prime. Around here thats usually October to January when they start rubbing.
Coyotes do far more good than harm eating rodents and such. Its sad that most people will stop and shoot a coyote for no reason. I'm also extremely opposed to the government predator eradication program. The government uses poison, M44's and aircraft with automatic rifles, as well as taxpayer funded trappers. Every animal that I trap gets used, while every animal that the government shoots, poisons or traps are left to rot.

Weather was perfect today. Got a lot done on my mud room. It has a framed doorway and walls with sheathing now. Will make a supply run for materials in the morning and be at it all day again. Supposed to be chilly nights but perfect days for the next few here. It’s always satisfying to see progress on a project for me.

When I lived in LA, they would howl every time a siren went by, 6-8 times a day. They were fine in the wild lands across the street
Then they started expanding their range due a wildfire. Kept running into momma as she was sneaking down the storm drain between the houses. She was on the other side of the chain link.
Little ones started appearing in the neighbors yard and running into the storm drain under my driveway. Animal control was useless.
Because I was trying to sell the house, I had to do something. Don‘t feel bad about it either.

Speaking of humans marking their territory, we always do during the summer. I also empty my cat litter close to my gardens, etc to keep away varmints.
