I'm retired l.e.o. and know that the average response time by police to
an emergency is 7 minutes.
MORE in many larger cities.
A lot can happen in 7 minutes.

Our crime rate is close to zero here. But occasionally our cop will trap some poor sap as he leaves the bar. Or maybe wait in hiding to write a couple of speeding tickets. They're kind of useless here.

We had a guy like that.
He would wait 'till his shift was almost over then nail some guy coming out
of a bar.
That way he'd bag himself at least 2 hours of overtime.

Now days the legal limit is so low it doesn't take much to be considered legally "impaired". The drunk driving laws are more about generating revenue than really dealing with a problem. A "drunk" driver is the least of my concerns. It's not unusual for me to drive an hour or more around here and not see another car on the road.

There are assumed risks involved with driving just like any other activity. And I'm only talking about my area. Hitting a deer, elk, bear or cow is a far greater risk than getting hit by a drunk driver. Happens every day.

My friend and State Trooper was killed by a drunk driver.
As fortune would have it I was the one that caught the driver.
He spent a whopping two years in jail and loss of license for life.
Two years.
The Trooper is still dead.

Actually I guess it isn't too uncommon for deer and bears and even cattle to get drunk from eating fermented apples in the fall. But at least they are smart enough to not drive. I wonder how a drunken grouse tastes....
