I think he was, GP, but then I'm a might prejudiced. He was a very humble farm boy of the Depression......not the least bit a braggart about his skill in a fighter cockpit. He was truly honored (and agonized over the decision) that 2 aviation companies tried hard for nearly a year to recruit him as a test pilot. That was the occasion of their encounter at Selfridge, actually. When my husband once asked Dad how he found Yeager, Dad said he didn't care for him much, as HE was very "full of himself", I believe is how Daddy put it. But he went on to say "I still respect his career and accomplishments."
