Good for them! I started working very young to help with the family bills but then I went to college and became an idiot for several years and wasted it all! I was 10 when I started babysitting and 14 when I got a "real job". Can you imagine what I could have done had I been wise?

... but, what's done is done. I applaud your kids for being wiser than I was.

I would never send my kids to college. I was convinced by a guidance counselor that I couldn't be anything unless I went to a large university. I simply wasn't mature enough for serious studying and I still had a lot to learn before picking a $50,000 career.

The best part is I went to school for something which is already an obsolete field. My degree isn't worth the paper upon which it's printed!

I can understand these Gen Z kids a little. They have been sold a lie and they realize it. Pair that with no discipline and entitlement and you get idiots who think socialism is the cure. The problem is, they're just trading one lie for another without ever dissecting it.

My first job was at 9 y.o. manually detasseling corn for $1 an hour.

I was shining shoes in a barbershop in Ft.Worth at 9 and wanted to save $25 dollars for Banana Seat, high-rise handlebars bicycle. As I had $21 dollars saved, I wanted to pick it up and buy the bike...and was told that if I close the account, it would cost me $5.00---so I took my hard earned $16.00 cash and never trusted a bank again...

Shoot, I was ripped off, then! I only made $5/week and I definitely worked more than an hour a day. 😆

That was why I didn't do babysitting much. I watched the vice principal's 3 demon spawn one night for six hours and got $15 out of it. Didn't pay for the necessary psychotherapy after that experience.

Nope. Never did it again.

My mom has had a bad week. Went to a cooked noodle in hot tub and i barely got her out. Today, i was polishing her nails and she said that on tv they were singing a gospel song. No one was singing. This is very scary. She turned 90 2 weeks ago.
Oh dear, I'm so sorry she's had a bad week.

Gospel singing always comforts my heart, so maybe she feels pretty peaceful, even if the singing isn't there. How are you holding up?

I hope everyone is ready. The Sh_t can hit fast and hard at any time.
My son just got back from Alaska this past weekend...and is talking about signing on to go back for a year! I respectfully asked him to take a pass on that.. which I normally would never do....he wants to go for the money which is hard to turn down I agree...I say no, we need you here more...I did also say, you are adult, your decision but I'm respectfully asking that you postpone...was that wrong?

He has a great job, he's just seeing more dollar signs in front of him...normally, I wouldn't blame him....but!

Help! Any wise advice other than stick to my instincts of staying out of it! 😵‍💫

I am not wise enough to give advice. But I certainly would do the same if my kids were older.

Y'all got me beat on the first job..I was 15 for first job..worked in department store during Xmas season wrapping gifts..worked myself into full time summer job as a floor clerk ...and got to leave HS early each day last 2 yrs cause i had enough credits to graduate and had a job..
Was a local department store..not a big brand chain. Got a good discount on clothes for school (which i bought putting on layaway) along with cigarette and little other extra spending money.. Yeah, most of my gang sneaked and smoked the cigs..

My wife and I both lived and worked in Alaska. After we moved back to the lower 48 she continued commuting to her job in Alaska. We both had a 3×3 schedule. That's 6 months vacation per year. The time off and the $$ is hard to beat. Most of our working career have been rotational jobs, many of which were overseas. Our longest hitch was 15 months, without a day off. Then 3 month R&R. In the Middle East I worked a 3 month on 2 week off schedule. In Russia and Asia I worked a 6×3 schedule.
The money and the time off on these jobs are great. We traveled around the world several times.
If a person can handle their money and invest it wisely, there's no reason they can't retire way early. I retired at 57 debt free, the wife retired even younger.
I couldn't imagine working 5 days a week and only getting a couple weeks vacation a year.

I guess I'm worrying too much about what I think is coming down on us...I understand we gotta live our lives on... He's hell bent on getting his pilot license also, so it would allow him enough time on his off times to do that...and move on...as for money, he's tighter than Dick's hat band!

Ok...I needed a positive note to line me out...I guess if SHTF while he's gone...we will adjust...or not...he knows his way around firearms and handy with fixing most things..so our loss, but I guess that's selfish of me to wish he'd stay.

He said "Mom, you think the world's coming to an end. If SHTF I'll be back" I'm saying, "No! If SHTF, you aren't getting back, cause nobody's getting anywhere from that far away !"

Alrighty! More power to him if he decides to take it. Uuugggh! ....Another time I'd be over the moon happy and wouldn't bat an eye about it! I still think shits gonna starting flying in the fan...but I am all about freedom of choice ...so I suppose that's my answer..

Sorry, had to vent it out..

When we lived in Alaska I was able get my son a good job up there, plus I got several of our friends and my sil jobs there too. Many times we flew friends and family up for visits.
If your son is interested in flying, Alaska is a great place to learn.
When my wife and I lived up there we took different flights to work, because of our position. The wife flew commercial and I flew on the company plane. After awhile we got used to flying on separate planes. Plus if the plane went down at least one of us would survive.
At the time we lived up there we were concerned that an EMP could happen. We knew that we'd never make back to family on foot. It's still in the back of my mind, but I don't see it happening in my lifetime. At least not on a large scale. Now days I'm more concerned about an economic disaster, our Marxist government, the invasion from illegals and for the future of our grandkids and their kids.
