We all have our personal experiences. I was a prepper back in the 2000's, and am a big believer in 'be prepared.' What we are seeing now out at the stores is panic, not people being prepared ...hoarding silly things like toilet paper (really? I mean there's this thing called a wash cloth if push comes to shove...)
I had a really bad divorce and things have finally calmed down on that avenue. That's a tale unto itself. Anyway, I have approximately 40 acres of land in WV but no cabin, no structure... and no one to really help me. I'm earning 50k area per year, with some debt and have had my guns, bags of beans, and even N95 masks for quite a while.. long predating the current craziness.
My frustration stems from our country essentially shutting down. People are dying yes... but from a percentage perspective it's like hovering around 2% of those who contract the virus, die from it. Most of those unlucky souls are in places like NYC and Los Angeles etc. So now we have this nationwide shutdown, and people buying up anything they feel might be useful because, let's face it.. they are coming to grips with the fact they can't trust the government to take care of them in a bad situation. (Many of us could of told them that quite a while ago.)
So we have that one the one hand, and yet there were still College student celebrations flocking to the beaches a few weeks ago. Where I am, bored college kids on masse headed to national forest scenic locations just last week. They also are mobbing the stores (Kroger, etc) and purchasing large quantity of beer, chips, etc for get togethers with their classmates.
This nonsense is causing my son to have to hole up in our apartment, and not interact with other kids out in the park and so forth as young people should do. The aquatic centers (recreational swimming locations) are all closed, the parks, stores, and so forth and our economy is going down the toilet.
I'm starting to really question whether the cure is worse then the disease here. Anyone want to work something out regarding the property? I have the bug out location but not enough flexible income at my disposal to make it bug out ready... plus.... what am I supposed to do then? Hermit in place waiting for all the craziness to pass? I don't have family here, and won't leave my son... and it's a joint custody deal....
So now we're having more ammo shortages and if we have one big scenario go down there will likely be a national ban on gun purchases and further restrictions. Unfortunately I'm growing older (50ish), and feel rather helpless in a time when I need my oomph more then ever.
