Really? I had no idea. I paint mine pale blue. LOL. Dusting it regularly with DE as well as the birds works for me.
I was spoiled in the past and had virtually no pests for them. Now, I am having to learn quickly!
I had a follow up dr. Appt yesterday...took 3 dozen eggs to see if staff wanted any..wasn't sure if they would cause some folks are a bit funny about that sort of thing..(around here)...they were all happy to have them, including the doctor...larry took mother to pick up her australian shepherd from groomers today and he was able to give away cple dozen there...we are now covered up in eggs!
I add herbs for the pests, but that's about it. I use the pine shavings in the boxes, so that helps..... I guess.
I throw herbs out too on occassion, I do dust the DE all around and inside coops regularly, and mix a bit in food too. Once in a while I get some pine shavings but admittedly, don't do that regularly.
I use those nesting box pads. Have a few boxes of them. Might switch to pine shavings after I use these. They are easy to change and very fluffy though.

We're finally getting a few eggs a day now. We also changed the feed we buy to a local feed mill.
What did you picture Arctic?

I'll probably get in trouble for saying this, but I guess I was picturing a scrawny, but cute, girl in pig tails, barefooted and wearing bib overalls. I got the cute part right.
Haha. Thanks. I have overalls but i actually work in mens boxer shorts and tee shirts and wear a ponytail and sun visor. We don't get many visitors. Lol
Just a quick tip on spring planting. Any Xtra space plant turnips if you have chickens. They can live off of being fed just turnip greens.
I always liked eating raw turnips with salt. Hated cooked ones. Felt like they did a good job of naturally cleaning teeth

What's the local going rate for chicks in your neck of the woods?
Here-
$6 for feed store chicks
$10 for specialty birds
$5-8 for regular birds
+$1 or so for every week past about 6 weeks in age
I'm always surprised that the local rates are so much higher than the shipped hatchery rates.

Your paying for the convenience of bringing them home right away. Plus they pay the same as you would from the hatchery plus markup.
Wow, if that is the price this year, that is a large increase.
What do you normally pay locally?
