People in Shanghai have been told by the government not to leave their apartments for any reason due to COVID. Some are saying Revolution is coming. People are screaming from the windows of their high rises apartments because they are out of food and starving. Some are leaping to their deaths.

People say starvation cannot happen in modernized countries, that this kind of draconian governance doesn't happen, that somehow, the Chinese methods of government and economics should be the wave of the future for the world....

The future is not written and definitely not predicitable. Dozens of "specialists" (even Prince Charles) have "predicted" the world will collapse dozens of times. Even one of your vice president candidates said so...The whole history of mankind is and has been RIDDLED with wars. Each KING or PRESIDENT has to have enough money to make war...and pay his soldiers. Once he is getting to the bottom of his "cash-flow" he calls a local other KING and asks if he is also having trouble paying his soldiers...they decide to insult each other openly and start a war. After another year or two of war ( sometimes 30 years and once even 100 years) they have killed enough soldiers and have lots of women without husbands for more fun. No more need to pay the soldiers.

This is NOT the only year with reduced food production. Fertilizers are purchased a year ahead generally. So when the Russian-Ukraine thing started the spring fertilizers had already been purchased. Need more this fall? Too bad, we don't have any or the production costs will be so high that some farmers will reduce their plantings.

We are capable of being food independent IF we chose to...the problem is that the bright lights of the big cities and a steady office job are much more attractive to the young. In their defense, farming is long hours that you rarely get paid enough for. No benefits or 401k matching.

Family farmers are dying and retiring in record numbers. We are quite literally a dying breed and the Fed gov is looking for yet more ways to make farming more difficult with more regulations.

China closing down the largest port in the world is going to bring dire consequences to us soon. They don’t have a date of when they will re open the port in Shanghai either. Not that we should be relying on ANYTHING from another country to survive!!!

From the data I just looked at, food from china is mainly stuff we can easily do without. Also saw some articles saying some of their rice is made partially of plastic!! Stuff like this makes me question eating store bought food again.

With the Shanghai Port being closed we probably aren’t getting anything right now. With you though, I want to shut them totally off! Nothing from China. Rebuild our production here.
