Calisthenics. Push-ups, sit-ups, dips, anything using your own body weight. Don't need a gym membership or any equipment besides your own limbs. Cuts out a lot of excuses.

Martial arts are great for many reasons, as noted in above posts. If you have a machete, get a professional to teach you how to use it. Disarms are good but what's most important is the psychology of combat (eliminating hesitation, controlling adrenaline, etc.) I highly recommend parkour as a physical discipline. The movements are great for both strength and cardio training and can really get you out of a tricky situation in a hurry.
