Amateur radio as a hobby is dying unfortunately. Australia just reverted to a class license, which means the government is no longer policing it, nor charging fees to use it. You are supposed to be licensed of course but we'll see how long that lasts. As for using it in a grid down, well my brothers don't own any, nor anyone else I deal with on a daily basis. If worse comes to worse you just be talking with a lot of hams who are typically pretty institutionalized and would consider what's discussed here as 'conspiracy theory'

Funnily enough, when people do finally wake up enmass they will be just as ineffectual as they are now. They will be like a prepper in his first week of enlightenment, running around looking for plastic drums and bags of rice and pasta to put in them. There are no shortcuts to being a survivalist.
