my wife's parents moved down from the North of England to the South West immediately after WW2 because they thought there was going to be a nuclear war with Russia, so I wouldn't say we never had that problem.
my main concern in the 21st Century with foreign powers is NK, wife's ex husband has been to Korea (merchant navy) and he says the Koreans aren't human, they are robots and they will do whatever they are told to do by TPTB, in this case the shortarse little fat kid with the funny haircut. he does worry me because he couldn't care less about the outcome, its all about not losing "face".
