Sure, but are you in the 50 mile radius shown on the map? (or just outside where the plume may reach)? If not, you're likely not going to get enough radiation to matter.
Also, you'd be amazed at how easy it is to mitigate the radiation you'd receive. In most cases, you'd only have to hold out in even a makeshift shelter, for 2 days to avoid the worst of it (and it may take a day or so to reach you). Giving you time to improvise. Look into it, it isn't as doom and gloom as you think. One of the best radiation insulators (earth) is within easy reach.
