Voluntary isolation facilities

State health officials also announced plans to open "voluntary isolation facilities" for people showing mild symptoms (see related story).

The Brown County Health Department tells Action 2 News their facility opened last week but would not reveal the location. Gov. Evers says two will open on Wednesday -- a Super 8 in Milwaukee and Lowell Center Inn in Madison.

People showing symptoms of the coronavirus can be referred by a medical provider to check in at one of the isolation facilities voluntarily. They'll be expected to stay for 14 days, or 72 hours after their symptoms are gone. Someone will check on them by phone every 4 hours during the day. The patient or the facility can end the stay at any time.

The State Emergency Operations Center is providing guidelines for local governments that want to set up their own voluntary isolation centers.

Van Dijk said the goal is to keep hospital rooms available for when there is an expected surge in patients.

State officials said Monday 20 to 25% of COVID-19 patients are hospitalized at some point during their treatment.

Ummmmm... No thank you?! I understand the idea of not taking up a hospital bed, but this sounds like a plan fraught with opportunities to go bad...

My first thought was the homeless taking every bed. No good deed goes unpunished.
