When Scotland ASKED to join the United Kingdon in 1707 it did so because it was absolutely and utterly bankrupt. they had seen how England was starting to build an Empire and the Scots wanted their own. So they poured all their nations available wealth into the patch of swamp that is now where Panama is but the climate and disease destroyed the Scots dreams and cost them their wealth.
So they came cap in hand to the old enemy south of the border and asked to join the union, which they duly did in 1707. So from 1707 until the late 1960s just about every facet of Scots life was paid for by the English, Irish and Welsh. Every road, street, harbour, school, water works, canal, hospital, railway, telephones ( invented by a Scot) public service etc was paid for by the UK. Then they found oil and they think the revenue from the oil should be THEIRS, and that the money we poured into Scotland for 300 years no longer mattered. They used to have a greatly respected close tribal community attitude based around the Clans, but in the last 60 years they have gone ever more socialist, Its not been so long that Scotland had the highest Alcoholic population in Europe, the most Obese adults, the most obese children, the highest rate of paediatric type one diabetics, highest suicide rate etc, the health and social welfare bill for the Scots has been IMMENSE.
YET the Scots are among the best educated, greatest innovators, hardest working ( and playing) toughest soldiers, kindest people on the planet. They are just TIGHT, tighter than a sharks arse at 100 fathoms, oh and a hatred unbridled of the English.
