I can only offer my experiences. Urbanprep, Jayson: have you ever been in uniform and taken part in a conflict? Such situations decide your actions in each fight. How they attacked: did they offer a no-attack/non-violent option before the fight started? Or did they just attack spontaneously after stumbling upon your camp? Did they start a small attack to test your strength and then attack your weak side? One is planned and devious, the other is lead from fear or hunger...
Each situation deserves another decision.
EXAMPLE: many Germans were taken prisoner is the fight on Stalingrad. Many were asked why they were still alive since the Russians were quite brutal with the prisoners after seeing the vicious destruction of the SS and the occupation of the taken lands.
The answer was, "I saw that we were surrounded and defeated, so I threw my weapon down and gave up like any intelligent person. They searched me and saw I could have fought further on, as I had ammo and grenades left over.
Those who had no ammo more and evidently only gave up because of their lack of further fighting ability...were shot on the spot as fanatical Hitler lovers".
The same in Vietnam: Soldiers (POW) were lined up and asked why they were in Vietnam. The officer asking had attended West Point and had spoken very good English. The first answered, "I was drafted and sent here".
The next said: "I got taken directly from High School, even tho I wanted to go to college".
The third one answered: "I came to Vietnam to find and kill all communists and destroy their plan to take over the world"
The officer pulled his pistol and shot him on the spot and left the others alive......
In Croatia, we had 3 Neo-nazi wanna-be soldiers show up who wanted to "play war". They spent three days crying in the trenches till we took their guns and ammo and sent them back to the rear where they then returned to Berlin. Probably told some big-time war stories getting drunk with their nazi buddies at home...
Remember, treat others as you would like to be treated and be ready to kill anyway. Very hard things to deal with people. GP

I hear you, Gary, and agree with your scenario. However, this is not war, and these are not "troops" fighting for their country, because it's what they were ordered to do. Even in your examples, there was still "civilization", and a place (gov't sponsored) to hold POWs. In a SHTF situation, anyone attacking your community is doing so because they want to kill, rape, and pillage. If someone breaks into my home while I am here, they are going down. Didn't you watch Vikings? When Bjorn allowed those guys to live, but exiled them, they came back to kill, rape, and pillage. No prisoners, no retreats. Come in peace, or leave in pieces.

Good Grief you people have some serious aggression issues to deal with 
, I agree with Gary's appraisal. I assume if anyone comes a salvaging / stealing most of you guys will kill them on sight, but when you have eventually go out looking for replacement resources you dont think other survivors should kill you guys in return as soon as they see you.??
As you walk / ride or drive by their homes/ properties they can assume you are checking them out for a later attack so its OK for them to take you out immediately???
So if you find yourself having to leave your home in search of something essential belonging to someone else they should shoot you on sight? You need medicine for example so you go to see what you can salvage from the pharmacist or local hospital, or a part for the tractor, or plumbing supplies, or any of a million reasons you are forced to go out on a recovery operation etc. You cannot possibly object if the owners of the pharmacy / hospital/ tractor etc shoot you on sight? as soon as you cross onto their property .
How about if you get caught innocently whilst out salvaging or searching and you find yourself on some other survivors property, you simply cannot object if they shoot you on sight, no questions asked.
Personally I will deal with any clear and present immediate danger, then garner as much humint as I can before calmly deciding what to do with trespassers, intruders etc..

I'm a slow learner but I'm finally starting to grasp the psychology that see's a kid shot dead for the crime of skinny dipping in his neighbours pool in NYC, or the Tourist shot dead through a home owners door after he got lost as dusk fell and he went and banged on a home owners door in TX , or being executed for being a black unarmed jogger in Georgia.

The first parts of your post would have been realistic if they where not to the extreme. Read the others posts that you disagree with carefully. It's not at all like the examples you claimed.

The extreme response has been clearly proven to NOT be a rare enough occasion in the US, and I believe AFTER TSHTF the nut jobs will be out in force blasting away at anything and everything.

I disagree these types are not rare. The vast majority are just mouthing off.
Sure the real nut jobs will come out and do some damage. They will soon be identified and taken out and the rest of us can carry on.

Post SHTF....my same rules for my present neighbors apply to any strangers : Don’t fool with me or my property and we’ll get along just fine. Just keep moving....
We will all learn our lessons, when we come to that point. Millions of young men and women have been sent into war and hundreds of thousands have been shell-shocked.
Until you have been in the "hell" of daily bombing, shooting and dying, try to keep your comments to a level which you are still telling what you know and not what you think you will do or hope you will be able to do. Just shooting a man which is nearing your house, (for whatever reason), and then find out he was escorting a group of kids leftover from a massacre. Who will take care of the kids now? You? after shooting their guardian angel...think they will not do you in at the first chance? Got enough food for them all or are you just gonna shoot them also??? There is too much leaning out of the window to even let things like a TV series over Vikings teach you to survive or who and why to kill!!The reality of _SHTF_ is yet to come and will not be like anything you have ever lived through if you have not been to war yet. After reading the Scenario and giving it some thought, I have come to the conclusion, I DON'T KNOW. I have never really been in anything that even closely resembles that situation and I am not really sure how I would react.
I would hope that I would take a day or so to work it out in my mind before I reacted. I know that immediately following any battle, I would most likely react with violence but I really don't think that would be the best reaction in all situations but, at this time, I do not know what the proper reaction will be.

GOOD MORNING VENOMJOCKEY!! Glad you joined us. I don't plan on feeding any prisoners, just making sure I am not made one and at the same time not killing the last person who could be a dentist, doctor or a computer nerd which could repair my solar system or fix my appendix and teeth. Don't need any fertilizer or dead bodies poisoning my fresh water system and will not carry the dead pieces miles away to do the same...better if they keep walking and know not to come back.
