I find it strange that every time a firearm is found at the scene of a crime, it is very quickly traced back to the original buyer. BUT there is no database of gun owners, right.

A lot of firearms found at the scene of crimes are never traced back to the owners. The real world isn't like CSI. There are a few states or cities I believe (NY, "kommifornia," probably Chicago) that may have very strict "registries" but for the most part they trace it by using the serial number and check the manufacturer to see where that particular item went, then checking with the store where the item was purchased. Stores are required to keep records of who they sold items to.
There is a of course a record (presumably) of every background check run before a firearm purchase, but that doesn't tell whether the item ended up being purchased, or exactly what it was. Just that someone intended, at one point, to purchased a firearm and got far enough along in the process that the mandatory background check was run.
With the way records are currently kept, they gun grabbers will have to go through the records of each gun shop and look to see who has them if they want to go "door-to-door" stealing them, in states that don't maintain databases of their own. Of course, they could look at records of who holds a CCW license, hunting licenses, things like that, but that just gives them a starting point and doesn't tell them exactly what or how many they need to collect.

So there is no data base but the manufacture keeps their records (database). The Seller keeps their records (paper trail and / or database) but we don't have a registry. That sound a lot like Bill Clinton's response-- That depends on what you call sex. We have a national database, it just requires a bit more leg work.

Plus when you purchase a new gun, there is always ammo in the box showing that they have a match for ballistics if needed.

I do expect to eventually see the sale of some models of firearms banned or restricted, similar to the Clinton gun ban, and more silly "buy back" scams that only stupid people will participate in. Plus much higher taxes on gun and ammo sales. But with the complete incompetency of the government I don't see any chance of a Nation wide gun confiscation. Without gun registration there's no way to know where or who owns what kind of firearm.

Iv been in the firearms business for different companies for over 30 years . Iv been asked by the atf 3 times to send them a copy of the 4473 form .
One of those had been sold decades before and we no longer had a copy .
The Feds can tell what retail unit a Firearm is shipped to from the manufacturer after that they go to the retailer to see who the original buyer is . A registration would trace the firearm every time the owner moves , sales or gives it away then new records would be started each time it relocates . Original buyer dies then new records for the location and new owner .
As far as the background checks auto deleting the Feds says they do as does the TBI that does them in TN . Take their word or research or maybe someone could take a job with them and let Us know .

IF they are able to enact a background check for private sales, then they will know someone (who is legal else a check will never be submitted) was looking to purchase a firearm. But, this would not cover who sold the firearm. So even this law would be incomplete and have no "teeth". In order to cover that "hole" would require even more laws. A never ending cycle but eventually the liberals will get what they want and be able to track and confiscate firearms. Will take a while to complete but they are working on it. Slowly but surely.

NOPE me either but it sure will help in the forced confiscation of our firearms. Finally the cat is out of the bag, they want all our guns. That's good for now. But the fact that a major contender for president publicly stated this is still alarming. Usually that's how it starts. In 5-10 years, 15 MAX it will be reality. Depending on how the next few elections go.

The Democrats and their over whelming desire to disarm us, is why my first long guns were AR15's. The next will be an AR10. Get what you can NOW and then deal with any bans in the future. Sooner or later they will try and ban all firearms, then it will be revolution time because they will have completely abandoned any semblance of following our Constitution.

Nup cannot we are the ultimate victims, in the 1990s we lost our guns ecept for a tiny few with strict limitations, and in the last three years we lost our Democracy. In 2016 17.4 million brits voted to leave the EUssr, it was the biggest exercise in democracy in british history. ALL the mainstream parties promised to respect and deliver the result, ALL have betrayed those promises, First the lib dems, then Labour, SNP, and Plaid, and now Boris Johnsons Conservatives. We have no arms and no Democracy.

The German and frech controlled EU is moving towards militarisation and its Presidents have openly said they want an Empire, The Fourth reich is nearly here.
