I just looked up grits. I didn't know it was made from corn. I'll have to give it a try sometime if I'm traveling and see it on a menu.
that looks like what we call a scone.Sausage, grits, eggs, biscuits. Maybe some hash browns and bacon too.
And bigpaul, this is what I mean by biscuit :
Several years ago the wife and I visited my hillbilly relatives in Tennessee. My cousin made something she called Catheads and red-eye gravy. It looked like a big biscuit. I remember it was really good.Same type of bread as scones, but the scones here are usually slightly sweet and somewhat hard. Biscuits are soft and not sweet, although they do have a bit of sugar.
My grandmother's biscuits were so good, my mother got worried I ate too many when visiting, so she told my grandmother I could only have one biscuit. So my grandmother made ONE BISCUIT for me the size of a large hamburger bun. ROFL
Cathead biscuits are baked touching each other. This makes them rise higher and makes the sides real soft. Sometimes seven or eight are baked in an iron skillet - one in the middle and six or seven around the outside. It comes out looking like one giant biscuit, but they can be pulled apart into the individual biscuits.Several years ago the wife and I visited my hillbilly relatives in Tennessee. Yep. That's them. Looks like they could be made in a Dutch oven in hot coals too.Cathead biscuits are baked touching each other. This makes them rise higher and makes the sides real soft. Grits on their own are a bit bland. But a little butter, salt and cheese and they are great. (Not so much a HEALTHY alternative at that point, though.)I’m not a grit fan either. Want to be, as they seem a healthy alternative to bacon and greasy potatoes, but just really don’t think the taste is very good. Just bland. I did have a bite of some shrimp and grits that had a spicy red sauce mixed with it and it was pretty good. I may order it next time I go to that restaurant.
