Zombie Attacks?

Bath salts, in the older cases, exploded cocaine baggies he had ingested to smuggle, in the most recent. But, the zombie apocalypse is a euphemism for third world urban hordes pouring out of the cities and into the countryside in a mindless, ravenous torrent, regardless of what collapse scenario compels them forth.

Bath salts, in the older cases

The Press would have you think so.

The most famous case was the one in Miami, where it was caught on video, and the one guy ate the man's face off, literally. Nearly every story said bath salts were suspected, and it caught on.

But, it wasn't. When the attacker was tested, all he had was latent traces of pot in his system. NOTHING else, no bath salts, no anything. Didn't mean the papers ever retracted or corrected though (and only grudgingly reported the test outcomes)...so, everyone still believes the case to be due to bath salts, even though it was proven otherwise.

I've know that pot creates the munchies, but...... Sorry, couldn't resist.

Routine drug tests look for known drugs. Bath salts are notoriously difficult to detect in standard drug tests. They are not detected by drug dogs and are not detected in urinalysis. The reason they are called "Bath Salts" has to do with the way they are sold more than what is in them. They are often UNKNOWN drugs, and therefore standard drug tests don't pick them up.

Even the tests they do for specific things aren't fool proof. My wife has a bi monthly test at her pain specialist, state mandated. It's come back negative for the stuff she's taking a couple times.

Granted, but as it was suspected, he was specifically tested for these compounds.

I don't think we'd ever see "actual" (rising from the dead) zombies....but I do think a situation like 28 Days is pretty plausible (i.e. an airborne rabies-like virus that makes victims homicidal). In essence, it wouldn't really be any different than a movie-like zombie apocalypse. (and with faster zombies).

You might want to read this article from Forensic Magazine, entitled "What are the difficulties in detecting bath salts, their effects and how do we test for them?"

Detection of Bath Salts
With bath salts being a new product with no exact chemical composition, toxicology companies have struggled to produce a detection technique. As many bath salts are made up of a large drug concoction, with current tests only detecting an individual drug and not a variety of drugs, this also decreases the possibility of detection.

Good article. Still, no reason to jump to the conclusion in the case though, and just leave it at that. My take is more that the guy was just nuts.

A slightly mutated Rabies virus would do nicely to create a real equivalent to the big screen "Zombies". I've killed a number of Rabid Animals back home in SD. Scary stuff.

EDIT: With humanity's habit of screwing with stuff (which I'm not completely against) I could also see something like that accidentally made.

Ever check out the stats on rabies? It's almost unique in how deadly it is (untreated). Pretty much a 100% lethality rating. I think there's only been a handful of such survivors out of the multitude of untreated cases.

Sounds like zombies, doesn't it?
(rabies description)
Later, as the disease progresses, the patient becomes agitated and combative and may exhibit increased mental confusion. The affected person usually becomes sensitive to touch, loud noises, and bright lights. The victim also becomes extremely thirsty, but is unable to drink because swallowing is painful. Some patients begin to dread water because of the painful spasms that occur. Other severe symptoms during the later stage of the disease include excessive salivation, dehydration, and loss of muscle tone. Death usually occurs three to 20 days after symptoms have developed.

mix rabies with ebola add flu in the mix, that could be "interesting".

Ebola Niger combine with Necrotising fasciitis, eaten alive from within and without at the same time, the fever and delerium plus two deadly contagions.......

hey,we are far better than some mad scientists ;)

Indeed it does. That description leaves out the Cerebral swelling though, which does wonders for aggressiveness. Once the frontal lobe starts being damaged we're just nasty little animals. (I work collections but my degree is Psychology)

To truly spread though, any contagion would need to be airborne. Spread by bite, I think we'd contain it rather quickly...

Unless the incubation time increased slightly, and it became spreadable by mere contact. Though I agree, airborn would be truly frightening.
