Winter Weather Folklore

I've never put much stock in wooly worms, etc, but this year I've noticed something .

I've lived here for 20 years and this is the first time the squirrels are stripping the bark on the cedar trees. I'm guessing it's because the cedar is sturdier and more weather resistant.

Any opinions?

Haven’t paid any attention to the tree rats, but I’ve seen some wooly worms that were mostly black. According to the old folks (I mean the ones that were old when I was young), that can mean a nasty winter. At least it oughta be interesting...

I could never remember if white wooly worms meant snow or the black ones.

My grandfather always said that the darker they were, the worse it was going to be.

Well, 2 thoughts. OF course, in sarcasm first, you know global warming is happening? So of course it's going to be colder this year... (let me know if this makes sense to anyone with a brain)

But more seriously, I thought I saw in the Almanac that they predict it's going to be a cold winter? It's been a cold start down here in TX as well. Lots of critters are confused as well.

It just seemed odd when I noticed the bark peeled all the way down on the cedars.

They will probably die now.

The squirrels take the bark off ceder trees because it's easier to peel, it's what they use here to line the nest for winter, you could be looking at a cold winter. We watch what the squirrels do during the fall, it's kindly a sign of a coming old man winter

I just look out the window and see a couple feet of snow on the ground. And then I look at the thermometer to verify that it's going to be a cold snowy winter. It's pretty accurate too.

I did hear something about this back along, it was explained that the squirrels were probably over populated and some of the males wouldn't get to breed this year and they are taking their frustrations out on the bark.

All I can say is Tuesday morning (Dec 11) there was ice on the water in the south Mississippi Delta, something I have NEVER seen in the fall before.

The MDWFP site says the deer should start rutting a week from now. They were in full rut a week ago.

Temps are in the mid to high 50s here. We have a lot of fog this morning. We've have more that usual fog alerts this year.

I know that I am tired of cold rain. Mud everywhere. Thank goodness today is the shortest day and we can start looking to the future. I want daylight after 4:30 p.m.

We got another foot of snow last night from an unexpected storm. Temps are still only in the low 20's so it's nice working outside. Next week it's supposed to be single digits or colder, plus more snow.

I predict I will not get any snow, today, tomorrow or any time soon. If I am real lucky, I will never, ever see snow in person again.

They are building mud men here because of all of the rain. I'm tired if it. My çhick run is mush and there is about 4 inches of sand on it. Washing it away.

We have winter storm warnings posted for snow from tonight through Tuesday. I'll be taking the wife to the airport during the worst of it tomorrow.
I thought AlGore and all the other global warming nutjobs, er..."experts" said it was supposed to be getting warmer by now.

Well, in Al Gore's alternate reality, the arctic is completely free of ice now and snow in the winter is a thing of the past. Polar bears are extinct, Manhattan has turned into Venice with canals instead of streets, and all the fish in the sea have died. The Gulf Stream has vanished, but the UK hasn't turned into a frozen wasteland because even Baffin Island stays warm in winter.
