How vulnerable is America’s power grid? The Wall Street Journal recently did an in-depth study to find out the answer to that question, and the results are unsettling.

“Despite federal orders to secure the power grid, tens of thousands of substations are still vulnerable to saboteurs,” writes WSJ reporter Rebecca Smith in the July 14, 2016 edition. “The U.S. electric system is in danger of widespread blackouts lasting days, weeks or longer through the destruction of sensitive, hard-to-replace equipment. Yet records are so spotty that no government agency can offer an accurate tally of substation attacks, whether for vandalism, theft or more nefarious purposes.”

Oddly enough some years ago some ultra right wing American Militias ( not the sensible ones todays) were threatening to start knocking out pylons across the US. At that time the US pylon network consisted of pylons with a 40 year operational life that were already 60 years old so they would not have taken much knocking down. Taking out telecoms and power distribution systems is often the first step in a protest movements steps against states and authorities because they see it as Economic resistance rather than terrorism.

Look-up you-tube videos featuring a Dr. Peter Pry for more very pertinent & accurate information regarding our nations power grid vulnerabilities, as well as other thoughts on EMP possibilities.

Living without power shouldn't be the end of the world. . .yeah for some in a literal sence, but those are on borrowed time. Yep, may sound heartless . . . just telling how it is. It is a very doable thing for most. Need to have the determination and drive to do so. The unfortunate of the situation will be the dang thieves and thugs that will want your stuff. If only they took that passion and used it to learn and use the skills that they would need to live off grid for a long period of time the world would be a much better place. That will never happen though.

Our power grid is definitely our Achilles Heel. Problem is, it's run by private companies, who need to have it cost effective to protect.

However, it isn't as vulnerable as it may appear, largely because there are so many ways to reroute, etc. and the fact that many stations are old (and not online), so hacking won't take out the manual switching stations, etc.
