"Employ critical thinking." Yes I can get on board with that. I think the main gist is that you don't blindly follow "rules" if your common sense tells you otherwise.

With dehydration, hunger, and exposure to the elements, critical thinking skills will degrade rapidly. A basic philosophy beyond STOP (Stay calm, Think, Observe, Plan) is to .... Drink when you can, eat when you can, rest when you can. Stay put until you can't. As always, leave a detail travel plan with friends or family members.

As for travelling at night...depends on where you are at...

For my Arizona trek on the El Camino Diablo (El Camino del Diablo - Wikipedia), night travel was low risk and fairly safe. Whereas, my equator trek across Kenya, night travel was out due to apex predators. On the Tsavo, had miscalculated the distance to my night camp (a ranger station). But, lucked out, and was able to spend the night tucked in a boma .... kinda like this one Boma (enclosure) - Wikipedia
 
it looks like many of these writers say the same phrases to the public.
We have more "cool" specialist. He has his own program on television, despite the fact that everyone laughs at him.

He catches crows with his hands, finds ingots of gold in an ordinary river, saws teeth for marmots, makes friends with a lynx, teaches chipmunks to dig holes, sleeps in a snowdrift, makes moonshine in a tin can, and even bathes in the sewers ...
