The house is a bit crowded these days and I am considering moving some things out to the garage. I started to research what could and couldn't be stored in an unheated detached building in the Midwest where it gets over 100 and below zero. I found the following: I have not included everything but I am sure there are other ideas, did not include things like "air freshener".
The "YES" list.
Razors
Laundry Products
Wipes
Cleaning Supplies( I would think liquids would freeze)
Soap
Liquid Hand Soap
Shampoo and Conditioner
Paper Products
Toothbrushes and Toothpaste
Body Wash( will freeze buy maybe be ok?)
Band-Aids-I would not recommend, the sticky part deteriorates.
The "NO" list.
Lotion ( it all separates in the heat and will never be the same)
Deodorant(stick kind melt just keep it upright, not sure about aerosols)
Batteries
Diaper’s
Candles ( don't care if they are bending as long as they burn)
Medicine
Food, canned or boxed or otherwise!
The question I have is, Can't some food items be stored in a detached nontemp controlled building??????

I would think that properly sealed and preserved containers of dry goods, like rice, dry pasta, cereals, dry beans, etc. would be fine.

I haven't had issues with mine. (other than switching to metal drums, because rodents will destroy a plastic one).... Though I haven't seen them get through the heavy duty plastic ones (one of my boarders uses it for their horse's grain).

I mean, our ancestors did it, prior to electricity.

Not counting the house/basement store. This is what I have in a tandem axle cargo trailer not listing food cots tents bedroll hygiene, big cook stove, wood stove firstaid etc.. Food, batteries and fuel gets rotated, all rechargeable's are kept charged. Think of it as the big daddy to the I.N.C.H. bag. The cargo trailer was originally set up to supplement the cabin (BOL) but the 'what if' such as not being able to make it to the cabin so we added to the trailer. The trailer is stored in the shop which keeps a somewhat comfortable temp

My mom has a walk in pantry outside that she keeps commercially canned goods, bags of beans and rice, paper goods, things like that, but she is taking a major risk not putting the bags of food in buckets with tight fitting lids. Even the paper goods should be stored in buckets or garbage pails. With our humidity her can goods will eventually rust so it's not a long term solution.

Amazon

I got goal zero chargers and several other brands that charge from USB, the panels are Renogy 100w x6 with controller, I have a inverter with USB ports, the frig directly plugs on to the batteries, plus I have portable solar panels from goal zero and anker.

It’s just a simple setup to do a simple job and the only reason for the frig is that I would keep medication in such as all my antibiotics and other OTC/prescribed medication.

Has anyone tried to put mineral oil on exposed aluminum to prevent rust when stored outside? Wondering if that would work or at least delay?

Short term mineral oil is good as long as it’s not handled much, coating and let set it will work but not if it gets wet.

I know there are products that you can use in the underside of your car to stop errotion and rust, but it would not be something I would put on a food can. Mineral oil was the only thing I could think of other than maybe paraffin wax but if that cracked it would let in moisture and then rust. Paraffin would most likely melt though. . . Yes kinda thinking out loud here

Aluminum forms a thin oxide skin that is self limiting and protective unless you are in a corrosive or salty atmosphere. Let the skin form first (dull gray finish) before using any kind of barrier. I'd use something like Johnson Paste Wax. No need to buff...

Do you think it would work on steel cans too and not melt with outside temps reaching close to 100 or a little over?

My experience.....i had home canned green beans stores in boxes in garage. Rings were removed.

A racoon (?) Pried open 14 quarts and spilled them everywhere.

Lesson learned.
I remember that story. I had a coon in my car over the weekend and the window was only open 4 inches. Just enough for it to get in, he moved stuff around in there, left prints on the window. Also has been eating some of the apples off the tree. They will go into the garage and any other building I leave open at night.
