I have tried to garden, preserving food, and cooking... I apparently suck at food from growing it to cooking from scratch...lol what skills are there that dont need food skills to do? I can sew clothing but I am not patient enough to knit or quilt, which stems from the same problem I have with gardening ... patients. I would like to learn to weave but looms are expensive and I dont want to spend it unless I will love it, I want a new skill and hobby but I can not think of anything useful that doesnt involve food or wood working which is also expensive.

Does anyone have ideas? I work most of the time so it will have to be a weekend hobby. I am normally obsessed with sewing but I have been losing too much weight to sew clothing for myself. I have lost 25 pounds in three months YAY... I need to do a skill/hobby till I stop losing sizes.

Thanks

thank you... all the people I know are well... old like 60 to 90 in the area I live... I work with a bunch of men Engineers they dont go for sewing... I need girl friends I think ... but you guys are as close to socializing as I get most of the time :) maybe I will give basket weaving another go... I will try to start small this time. the problem with crafts is usable crafts are hard to come by in the crafting books, stores, and websites.... their idea of fun is to make ornaments, or scrapbooks... yuck, the most non useful craft I can tolerate is painting which is something I can do well.... I was just looking for some ideas on how to make things that have a function from some ladies who make things.

might try looking around to see what others like and use in thier every day lifes when your in town or where ever.then decide what can be and is most usefull right now.and can be usefull later on in life.and them guys that are 60 to 90 you can learn things from them.learn what kept them busy/ intertained.what did they use in every day life while growing up..who knows.one of them might tell ya some thing that (you) can go with

25lbs is awesome! Sounds like a hobby I should be doing! I have always liked hands on hobbies that produce something tangible. I guess woodworking is my favorite, and it's really nice to just build anything you need. Look at the pioneer days, they made soap, candles, crafts etc. my best suggestion is pick whatever your interested in, then it's fun, instead of work.

I am only assuming here since you like to sew, but you have tried crocheting, as in maybe an afghan, scarf, hat, etc? It's nice to be able to sit by the fireplace this time of year crocheting a blanket you can drape across your lap, plus it helps you keep warm. I like Brent's suggestions of making soap, is not that hard and neither are candles for that matter.

candles and soap I will try after :) Basket Weaving ... it is less like cooking and doesnt require measuring and recipes lol but I also want to make prepping binders that I can refer to as a reference... I am trying to teach myself to weave a basic square basket today... it is going okay but I dont think it is pretty and usable yet. :) I have the supplies too which is a bonus I dont need to buy anything to start.

My favorite preps are the ones that I work with what I have. If tshtf, we will all have to learn to work with what we have available. When you finish the basket post us a picture!

If you want to give the household type activities a rest try archery, chopping wood, fishing though you need some patience LOL.
How about hiking through local woods and identify or gather nuts, berries or edible foilage in your area making note for shtf reference.
Being out in the fresh air great for mental health and your weight loss!
Good luck

Leatherworking is something the wife and I are getting into. We own a saddle shop, so we're familiar with minor repairs, but currently, for anything major, we sub that out to a guy. Would be nice to be able to keep it inhouse. Also though, I'd like the ability to make nice custom knife sheaths, gun holsters, custom bags, etc.

- Dynamic shooting
- Learn how to Distill Alcohol (of a high concentration for medical use)(Do not do practice it if its against the laws of your state.)
- First Aid (sprains, trauma, curing food poisoning)
- Bush Crafting
- Trapping
- Learn to make things useful for defense of your home.
- Fetching
- Fishing
- Welding
- Smiting
- learning the local flora
- Make a home defense and evacuation plan
- Mapping out the area. (buy a good map/multiple maps or satellite photos of your place and the nearby area. You want to plasticity it so you can use white board markers to make adjustments on it that you later remove. Color code it. List stores and warehouses of interest, and mark them on the map. use numbers for them. List potential safe zones like a remote cabin in the woods. Plan ambush sites and mark them on the map and where they would be so you can avoid them. find and mark any and all trails or dirt roads that aren't on the map yet. Identify and mark any dangers weak spot of your perimeter.)

Tbh, there is nothing that you cannot learn to do that most men do.

Get into reloading ammo. Very very nice and a good time spender

I also like productive hobbies, where they make things I want or need anyways. Think about what you buy or use regularly and see if it's possible and even fun to make it.

Some skills I think would be in high demand post SHTF: (and once people actually try to settle in settlements again)

Plumber (using non-power methods)
Mechanic
Handyman (general)
Construction (carpenter, mason, etc.)
Electrician
Blacksmith
Farmer
Fisherman
Herder
Hunter (includes skinning, butcher, etc.)
Firearms/Ammo specialist (repairs, reloads, etc.)
Medical (especially using herbal, old remedies)
Salvager (one who goes into the ruins of cities looking for things that got overlooked by previous looters)

You may want to look into the SCA, society for creative anachronisms. It's a historical reinactment group. They have many functions, events and meet and greet type of get-togethers and you don't have to be a member to participate. Many there know and practice pre and post Renaissance crafts and skills. Nothing modern is encouraged and they do fun role play and historically based reenactments.
