I wasn't so lucky, when I was a boy scout in the country that I live, all we did were games, we never actually learned anything concerning survival during my time in the boy scouts.
Most of what I've learned was taught to me by a family member who taught me the stuff he learned in the military and our subsequent camping trips and followed survival courses. I still think stuff like fire making is a bitch though, so where as my family member runs around with his fire steel, I just pack multiple lighters (the single button ones). Granted that resource is limited, but works in most situations for as long as it lasts. Considering I always carry full lighters, that's not a big prob. for shorter periods of time.
