North Korea's military vowed a new and unusually specific threat to its neighbors, saying it would reduce South Korea "to ashes" in less than four minutes.

The statement, released Monday when programming was interrupted on North Korea's state TV by a special report, comes amid rising tensions on the Korean peninsula.

Earlier this month, North Korea was unsuccessful in a long-range missile launch, prompting worries that North Korea may conduct another nuclear test. South Korean officials say new satellite images show that North Korea has been digging a tunnel in what appears to be preparation for a third atomic test.

According to the Associated Press, the statement from North Korea was unusual in promising something soon and in describing a specific period of time.

The North Korean military threatened to "reduce all the rat-like groups and the bases for provocations to ashes in three or four minutes, (or) in much shorter time, by unprecedented peculiar means and methods of our own style."

For months the North has castigated South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and the conservative administration for insulting their leadership and criticizing a new cruise missile capable of striking anywhere in the south.

South Korean officials responded, urging North Korea to end the threats. "We urge North Korea to immediately stop this practice," Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Hyung-suk said, according to the Associated Press. "We express deep concern that the North's threats and accusations have worsened inter-Korean ties and heightened tensions."

Meanwhile, in a meeting Sunday with a North Korean delegation in Beijing, China's senior official on foreign policy praised the leadership shown by North Korea's new young leader, Kim Jong Un.

The meeting follows the April 13 launch of what the United States called a disguised ballistic missile test by North Korea. The rocket disintegrated minutes after launch.

I'm not sure what you're after with this post, I think people believe it is too scary to contemplate a rogue state that has nuclear capability. Unfortunately, the rogue state of North Korea (NK) has done some the strangest sh*t - blowing up passenger airliners, kidnapping and brainwashing foreigners to name a few and for what purpose? The next unique 'weapon of mass distraction' is just around the corner and who will invent it first? Hopefully not a rogue state!

The 'hold on to power at all and any cost' has worked in Burma (slowly changing after 30 yrs), Zimbabwe (no change after 30 yrs), many middle eastern countries (change for the worst), and many others - which are not as extreme and sometimes limited to just one incident during an election year.

Most countries, especially communist countries, have worked out that capitalism (a great rewards system for an innovative progressive people) is the future (for now) but if a major power wants to hold NK back to keep other countries 'in check', then you will continue to have a NK - China will put up with NK until it has outlived its usefulness.

Can you imagine a combined North / South Korean peninsula on China's doorstep? The people who suffer the most with these games are the Koreans - LOL.
The rest of us are left to pray that sanity wins the battle .

I think the little dictator is throwing a hissy fit temper tantrum that we are NOT paying attention to him and his arm waving due to our real threat of Islamic Jihad in our homefront. He needs to go back and drink some more Mountain Dew, eat Doritos, play with his toy soldiers with his generals.

He's young, has had some really bad role models and is most likely commanded by his Generals.
The Generals have had the power since the 50's.
The Generals aren't going to give it up to some overweight kid with a bad hair cut, in a trench coat. The kid is the fall guy - blame the new kid.
NK needs a strong leader who wants change and promotes like minded people into ministerial positions and senior Officer positions who will follow that change of action.
Unfortunately, we have the Kid and no answer in sight.
Everyone is frustrated with this stalemate.

You would think with the wars that we have had and all the blood shed and loss of life people would get a grip on life and get along

There's always scumbags wanting a free ride on other people's efforts. using gov't and /or military to achieve that end has been a favorite method for 1000's of years.

Wars are always about the control of resources. No matter what other reason is claimed, it always comes down to this. The reason is simple. A nation doesn't make the investment in war without an eventual gain in resource control. Otherwise, it isn't worth the expense of war. Even the most religious wars in history (the Crusades), were really more about securing the trade routes to the East, than they were about recapturing Christian lands (and of course, controlling those resources) ;)

Nuclear Threat Escalates as North Korea Restarts Reactor
Satellite images indicate that North Korea has followed through on its threat to reconstruct and restart its nuclear reactor at Yongbyon to make plutonium for more nuclear weapons. If the United States does not respond by pushing for negotiations with North Korea, it will be tantamount to accepting North Korea as a nuclear weapons state, something that four successive administrations have strongly opposed.

Oddly, the Russians seem more ticked about it than we are. (of course, that could be because NK could suck attention away from Syria, greenlighting an attack all the sooner).

That Kim guy is a real brat... always wanting attention in his direction....

Unless this is part of the plan. Here in the Philippines, we say "Urong Sulong"... "Step Back, then Rush Forward" (when no one is looking)
