Some rare positive news has emerged from Oxford University this afternoon, whose researchers have discovered the first drug proven to reduce Coronavirus deaths. If it had been used from the start of the pandemic, it could have saved approximately 5,000 British lives…

The steroid, dexamethasone, costs merely £5 per patient, “So essentially it costs £35 to save a life.”

The Oxford University trial of around 2,000 hospital patients saw patients on ventilators death rate cut from 40% to 28%; and for patients needing oxygen a fall in the risk of death from 25% to 20%. Good news…

That's great, but it is a corticosteroid and has a whole host of serious side effects. Short term use might be OK but it's not something that you want to take for any length of time.

Important warnings
  • Heart Damage Warning: If you’ve recently had a heart attack, you may be at increased risk for further heart damage from this drug. Before starting this drug, be sure your doctor knows you’ve had a heart attack.
  • Infection Warning: Dexamethasone can cover up or worsen certain infections. In addition, infections can develop during treatment. Don’t use this drug if you have fungal infections, or a history of parasite infections or tuberculosis. Tell your doctor about any past illnesses or infections.
  • Eye Problems Warning: Using dexamethasone for long periods can lead to eye problems such as cataracts or glaucoma. The drug may also cause damage to the optic nerves, or fungal or viral eye infections.
  • Measles or Chickenpox Warning: Tell your doctor if you haven’t had chickenpox or measles, or if you haven’t had the vaccines to prevent them. You could have more serious versions of these illnesses if you have them while taking dexamethasone.

It’s looking like this drug helps 20 to 30% of cases so far. Really encouraging to have some good news here with cases starting to rise across the country. 20 states reporting higher new infections. If we can get two or three effective treatments for this virus then it will hopefully fade into the same worry as the regular flu.
