The other thread on oil got me thinking. With it's exp date it will be hard to come by in SHTF. I looked into it and quickly found what seems to be pretty easy instructions on how to make your own oil.

Gotta have that fried food!! Has anyone tried this or someting like it?

Instructions

    • 1
Shell the sunflower seeds. Use a seed mill if available, or a blender if not. (or just smash the seeds how you see fit in a SHTF scenario) If using a blender, place the seeds in the blender and use the "pulse" setting for a few repetitions of a few seconds. Remove the seeds. Drop them into a container of water and remove any remaining shell fragments from the surface of the water, they will float to the top leaving the seeds at the bottom. Empty the container and collect the seeds.

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit and place the sunflower seeds on a cookie sheet. Roast in the oven (or fire) for about 30 minutes or until brown. Remove the sunflower seeds from the oven, allow to cool, and then crush them into a paste with the pestle.

Fill the water container with water and the seed paste. Heat the water to boiling. When the vegetable oilrises to the top, skim the oil off the top with a spoon and place it in a second container. Place a lid on the container and store the oil in a dry location at room temperature.
