BIG difference.
Prepping isn't a metal or emotional disorder.
I think being prepared is just smart.
I think all of you here think so also.

Hoarding disorder is a persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. A person with hoarding disorder experiences distress at the thought of getting rid of the items. Excessive accumulation of items, regardless of actualalue, occurs.

I've been accused of "hoarding" my firearms.
There is a difference between collecting and hoarding.
A person who collects stamps, coins, etc. isn't hoarding.
I have something like 50 guns. 26 are handguns. Many of the handguns aren't made
any longer and value has skyrocketed.
No way am I going to part with them either.

Prepping isn't even close to hoarding.
Stock piling food, firearms, ammo, books, medical supplies is just plain smart
in an uncertain world.

I DO know a fellow that exhibits symptoms of hoarding.
He just can't throw away paper.
ANY paper. Sandwich wrappers, MacDonald's soda cups, newspapers, etc.
I one time searched a house for an old single lady reported missing by her
neighbors. FOUR FEET of newspapers and magazines in her house in all
rooms.
We didn't find anything.
Days later we did when she began to stink and rot.
She was covered in 2 feet of newspapers.
THAT is hoarding.
Things of zero value.

Many that suffer from morbid obesity suffer from hoarding and other emotional
disorders.
Morbid is 100 pounds or more over recommended body weight.

Most people that have gastric bypass surgery loose weight quickly.
And put it right back on and then some in under one year.
It's a mental disorder.

If the mind is healthy the body should be and the reverse.

The way I view it, hoarding is the house becoming a garbage can of un-useful items. Guns, ammo, medical, books etc... doesn't fall under hoarding, ok, maybe books can by overgrowing one's living quarters. Though, if everything has a place and organized that doesn't overwhelm living conditions is that truly hoarding? Most pictures and on TV showing hoarding I'd say 95% is the direct result of laziness or at a point in their life they are unable to take care of themselves. Unfortunately physico-doctors try to find fault and put a label on it, instead of calling a spade a spade they claim mental disorder, I don't doubt hoarders are out their just not at the level being portrayed.

Regarding food and water, I'm sure the collective will claim I am hoarding even though it's out of sight, organized and has a purpose, only the collective will say I am hoarding given I don't share with the collective village aka lazy-ville thus I am demonized.

Pantry shelves are neat & organized. . . heck, even labels are front and forward except that one on top right shelf. That one would bug me ;). Its all in presentation. Know of a guy that has so many filled canning jars that he now stacks, throws tablecloths over them and uses in place of furniture. . . night table, coffee table, etc. Get a piece of glass on top. In his guest bedroom, he took down his bed frame even and just lays his mattress on top of cases of jars. I'd be worried something would happen to my jars, but now I think he did say something about also having 5 gallon buckets under there for support.

My Wife and Daughters have OCD and know when I've been in a room especially in the kitchen :( I also have a problem with jars too in particularly with lids and rings, I haven't made furniture out of mine yet instead I got them stored in the shop... not by choice mind you ;)

Awesome pantry!

Pretty impacting picture. Personally I don't care what anyone thinks about me and prepping. I honestly think anyone who doesn't prep is an idiot. Anyone who thinks nothing bad will ever happen to them with the way the world is really does have blinders on. I'm not even talking shtf here, just any kind of emergency or disruption that goes on for more than three days and wipes out the grocery stores.

" It won't happen here."
" That only happens in 3rd world countries."
"That won't happen in the U.S. After all the gov't will help us."
And other famous last words.

Hillbilly saying: " Hey fellers watch this. "
Last words. R.I.P.

It's the "gimmie" people that are a major threat among others.
Those that are a multi generational society living from gov't programs
like welfare etc.
Free rent, free food, free utilities....................

If a shtf they gimmie people will turn criminals pretty quickly.
"gimmie mo', gimmie mo', I want's mo'. If I don't get mo' I'll burn
down da hood!"

Correctamundo! But, there's probably plenty of folks who think I'M the idiot. They might be right.

If you're an idiot then everyone here is also.
We are in good company.
Those "critics" will come begging for help when the food runs out.

Frankly I don't tell most people I know (few that they are) anything
about prepping plans.
I get this from the few that know my firearms and ammo supply:
"Why do you need so many guns? Why so much ammo?"

I just tell them it's a hedge against inflation. Ammo isn't getting
any cheaper very soon.
When I was a cop I gave talks to various clubs, civic groups, on things
like home security, baby sitting, BABY SITTING??? Yup.
Young teen girls get molested sometimes.
Young teen girls are targets for miscreants.
Young teen girls are vulnerable.
I got one question, a universal question:
" If someone breaks into my home at night while we are there can I shoot
them?"
Well that depends.
My thoughts are that I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
Just sayin'.

I NEVER said to put a kitchen knife in the dead crooks hands.
Nope, never, not once.....................well............................never mind.;)

in my humble opinion prepping has nothing to do with hoarding, uhm,we don't collect crap..
what we have will most likely keep us alive, what a hoarder has will not, those who cannot spot the difference
between these two, should have a check of what they have between their ears.

"I was afraid for my safety and my life" is a phrase every gun owner (Or anyone else who protects themselves or their family) should be able to say without hesitation. And not the least reason, because it's the truth.

I have stories that most people just flat out can't believe.

I don't doubt that for a moment.

Well said, Jontte!! Absolutely true!

Jontte's post makes me feel a little better. I border on hoarder. (hey, that rhymes ) I have a hard time getting rid of anything that has value, except that the stuff I keep really does have some value. In my electrical business I wind up with lots of leftover parts, pieces and materials. Some of it is unusable junk but even that is worth something to the scrapyard. Some of it is obsolete parts/pieces that really can be tossed out..but often when I toss some of that stuff out, I wish I had it for a repair a few weeks later and remember I tossed out that part that I could have re-sold/installed for $50 or so. But ya can't keep everything. Some stuff is stuff I keep for when we have the next garage/yard sale. And, as bad as I hate to admit it, there's a part of me that completely understands the folks who keep stacks and stacks of newspapers, or McDonalds cups, or whatever. I get it and have some trouble faulting them for it. Until it gets like some of the pictures above. If my mind slips very much more as I get older, be watching for me on one of 'those' TV shows. :(
P.S. For the record, I don't save stacks of newspapers, or McD cups or cat liter, etc., etc.....yet.

think we all have had that moment, when we threw stuff away and as you Rob said,a few weeks later;darn, just the part is broken which I threw away..
it's the way it goes :)

Hey, even those stacks of newspaper, any unwanted mail etc can be shredded, put into a bucket, mash down, cover with water and add in a little laundry detergent. Let soak overnight and then put in a mold to make bricks, squeezing out excess water. These can be used as fire starters and burn for quite a long time. One mans trash is another mans prepping treasure. If one puts their mind to it, you can usually find a use out of something.

I guess I learned to not waste things from my parents.
Both raised on farms, livestock, gardens, canning, preserving, etc.
Dad often spoke of his dad giving the boys a gun, shotgun, or .22 and just
two rounds.
Better come home with the ammo or two things for dinner.
If they missed they'd better run something down and beat it to death!
Groundhogs weren't shot. They DUG them out with a shovel!
When I was a kid there was a general store down the road.
"Down the road" was 7 miles and we walked.
That store sold shotguns shells and .22 ammo by the round!
If someone bought a whole box they were suspected poachers.
That was some 60 years ago.

Raised with almost nothing might be why I cherish what I have now.
I have plenty.
I'm afraid they might quit making guns, ammo, etc.

I've often used newspaper for mulch in the garden.
Keeps moisture in and weeds down.
Biodegrades.

IF one MUST shoot someone that is a threat the " I feared for my life and the lives
of my family" is the best thing to say then SHUT UP!
Here's what to do.
"I'm just sick and need to go to the e.r."
Then GO!
Be as nervous as a dog pooping razor blades.
Get a shot of "calm me down", Valium, whatever, and go to sleep, call
lawyer a.s.a.p.
We police officers had that down pat.
I never shot anyone. Most police do not.
Thank gawd.
I sure as heck mixed it up with a lot of miscreants.
13 serious injuries and disabled.
By the way. Mace (tear gas stuff) often won't work.
I maced a woman I didn't want to harm and she just got really pissed.
I was lucky and only had to restrain her.
But the mace sure worked on me!
Had to drive her to jail with my head out the window.:confused:
One of my guys shot a ethnic running from a rape.
The victim was in her 80's!!!!!!!!!! PERVERT!
Cop shot the guy in the leg.
We searched for a weapon in the grass and found 3 straight razors,
2 knives, and a .25 auto.
Hum???????????? How'd they get there?

Oh! I interviewed the rapist at the e.r. who was in gross pain.
He refused to i.d. himself.
Soooooooooooooooooooooooooo...............
I unplugged his I.V. and cut off the morphine.
He talked!

Was that fair???
And just what does fair have to do with anything?
We don't deal with choir boys ya know.

If it were your grandmother that got raped you'd be happy the
"suspect" went to prison also.

By the way.
When that guy got out of prison he went back to being an azzhole and someone
shot him in the head.
Bury one, lock one up.
Ohhhhhh, well.

That is a very common thing with 'ethnics'. Rape of very old women and assault on the elderly. Not sure why.

I believe because they are vulnerable.
Or at least appear vulnerable.
They even prey their own kind.

Man the horrible things I've seen.

I recall and ethnic woman that thought her man was cheating.
Of course he was.
She found out where and took along a 12" butcher knife.
She didn't hurt him, she stuck the knife in her............., ahem, ah,......
well where his thing had just been.
She left it there too!
We got there to a real bloody mess.
First aid?? DIE!
I ain't going anywhere near that thing.
The e.m.t.'s came and just wrapped her up in the bed sheet and transported.
She almost croaked. Many units of blood.
Of course her insurance covered it.
WHAT INSURANCE?

Our tax money at work. Again.
Then there was the ethnic gentleman that caught his woman cheating.
Dowsed her in gasoline and lit her up.
She lived but was an awful looking thing.

The ethnic woman that took a bath in drain cleaner to look white.
UGLY. She basically dissolved.
My good friend and sometimes informant named Bea.
Her man stuck a butcher knife in her heart.
It was a Sunday when I got called out to investigate a homicide.
I rolled the slab out of the morgue and.......................

it was Bea.

I went hunting determined to shoot the bastage.
I always worked alone.
I found him in an abandoned house in the attic.
He was cowering and had pissed himself.
I just took him by the hand and led him out like a whimpering baby.
He served 2 years for manslaughter.
Go figger.
Alcoholism, p.t.s.d., depression,...................................
Wonder why?

Ask me about the night I found 3 neighbor teens dead on the road Dec. 23rd.
Merry Christmas.

I had to tell the parents!

Or the night a nut walked through the Chrysler Twinsburg plant and killed
13 and wounded a score more.
Shot at me 2 X at 5 FEET and missed.
I firmly believe he just didn't want to shoot me.
I don't know why and never will.
P.T.S.D., depression, now a bit bi polar..........................I earned it.

I like being bi-polar.
We get along, always agree with one another, one tells the other it's o.k.
to drink again but the other wins the argument.:D

Did I mention the ethnic woman that caught her man cheating and threw
lye in his face?
Blind forever.
Well, scum is scum ya know.
Not all are like that however.
I knew some dandy blacks that went to college and did well and lived
in white neighborhoods.

Nice folks.

Psychotherapy, A.A., and most important to me ...............God.

Why I'm not in a mental ward is beyond me.

If you wonder why I post this stuff .............

I'm obviously a survivor.
I love being prepared. It's just sensible.
I want people to know what some police officers endure.
Many places, large and small, are literally war zones.
The next call for service could be the last call ever answered.
