Also, an interesting Japanese weapon (that is also quite practical and utilitarian for non-weapon purposes) is called a kyoketsu shoge.

It consists of a kind of double-edged hook-style knife with a 12 foot length of rope attached to the butt of the knife, and this rope terminates with a steel ring on the end.

It sounds horribly ungainly and impractical, but it can be used for offense or defense, it can be used to climb trees and walls, you can tie a prisoner up with it, it can be used to make a snare and/or boobie trap to catch animals for food, the blade can be used to process animals for meat, and so on.

To use it as a weapon, the user should study a martial art called tai-jitsu, as these empty-handed techniques and principles can be applied to many different weapons.
