U.S. Reels Toward Meat Shortages and the World May Be Next
(Bloomberg) -- Plant shutdowns are leaving the U.S. dangerously close to meat shortages as coronavirus outbreaks now spread to suppliers across the Americas.

Almost a third of U.S. pork capacity is down, the first big poultry plants closed on Friday and experts are warning that domestic shortages are just weeks away. Brazil, the world’s No. 1 shipper of chicken and beef, saw its first major closure with the halt of a poultry plant owned by JBS SA, the world’s biggest meat company. Key operations are also down in Canada, the latest being a British Columbia poultry plant.

While hundreds of plants in the Americas are still running, the staggering acceleration of supply disruptions is now raising questions over global shortfalls. Taken together, the U.S., Brazil and Canada account for about 65% of world meat trade.

Coronavirus breaks the food supply chain
The big picture: Plants in more than a dozen states have closed in recent weeks, spanning beef, pork, poultry and fish.

  • Many more plants are struggling to remain open despite significant outbreaks.
  • More than 25% of U.S. pork production is now offline because of plant closures, WashPost reports, citing industry analysts.
  • Tyson Foods described this as a "breaking" of the food supply chain, warning on Sunday that millions of animals will need to be killed without being turned into food.

Check your local Restaurant Depot, Cash N Carry, etc. for meats. They have supplies in bulk, for less. I went last week and got two ten # boxes of 6oz salmon portions for $38 ea. A 40# box of chicken breast for $30, and two 10# boxes of 1/4" apple smoked bacon, $44 ea.

I’m actually with trump in saying the plants need to stay open. Farmers and consumers both need this not just for now but for future needs. If farmers go under then we will all be in trouble. I’ve wondered though about the lawsuits from this. Will the feds protect the companies from wrongful death lawsuits?

I agree that we need them to stay open. I don't like the government telling people what to do unless absolutely necessary. My main concern here is simply the logistics of enforcing the order.

A top World Health Organization official said Thursday that China is blocking the WHO from participating in China’s investigation into the origin of coronavirus.

Dr. Gauden Galea, the WHO’s representative to China, told Sky News that the WHO has made repeated requests to join the investigation to no avail.

“We know that some national investigation is happening but at this stage we have not been invited to join,” Galea said. “We are expecting to get in the near future a briefing on where that is and to discuss possible collaboration.”

He added: “WHO is making requests of the health commission and of the authorities. The origins of [the] virus are very important, the animal-human interface is extremely important and needs to be studied.”

When asked whether China had a good reason for excluding the WHO, Galea answered: “From our point of view, no.”

China’s refusal to cooperate with the WHO — which has aligned itself with China throughout the pandemic — came as the U.S. Intelligence Community is investigating whether the virus could have leaked from a Wuhan lab.

“The [Intelligence Community] will continue to rigorously examine emerging information and intelligence to determine whether the outbreak began through contact with infected animals or if it was the result of an accident at a laboratory in Wuhan,” the Office of the Director of National Intelligence said in a statement Thursday.

President Donald Trump said Thursday that information he has seen leads him to believe the virus originated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

“Have you seen anything at this point that gives you a high degree of confidence that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was the origin of this virus?” a reporter asked Trump at Thursday’s press briefing.

“Yes, I have,” Trump answered. “And I think the World Health Organization should be ashamed of themselves, because they’re like the public relations agency for China.”

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for an “independent assessment” into the origins of the deadly virus — a statement that sparked backlash from China.

“This is a virus that has taken more than 200,000 lives across the world. It has shut down the global economy. The implications and impacts of this are extraordinary,” Morrison told reporters Wednesday.

“Now, it would seem entirely reasonable and sensible that the world would want to have an independent assessment.”

Republican Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton has similarly argued that the virus most likely leaked from a Wuhan lab in the area where the outbreak is believed to have first started.

In an April 21 Wall Street Journal op-ed, Cotton pointed to Chinese authorities’ cover-up of the virus in its early stages to argue that they have something to hide.

“This evidence is circumstantial, to be sure, but it all points toward the Wuhan labs,” he wrote.

“Thanks to the Chinese coverup, we may never have direct, conclusive evidence — intelligence rarely works that way — but Americans justifiably can use common sense to follow the inherent logic of events to their likely conclusion.”

Trump said the meat processing plants are not allowed to close. What happens if they employees all get sick or refuse to come to work? Are they going to force them to work?

My bet would be that they would first try to entice workers with hazard pay. If that didn’t work I can see military being trained and used.

Another Tyson plant has been closed for a few days to clean. The plant is in Robards, KY. Lots of coronavirus infected people I guess. It’s interesting to check the school data on small towns close to these plants. For instance, the small town of Sebree KY has 50% Hispanic kids in the elementary school. The ranking of the school is in the toilet. While the other elementary schools in that county...without a ton of illegals, is doing well.

This is a prime example how illegals harm our country and HURT our children.

Georgia there is a chicken plant ( not Tyson) not far from where I live maybe 20 minutes. When my youngest daughter was off from college she ended up working there one summer. She said the majority of the workforce was Guatemalan and illegal. When trump took office and ICE started raiding they had huge Guatemalan lay offs the DAY BEFORE Immigration showed up. Once the threat was over they were hired back. My daughter eventually quit at her father's demand when a male Guatemalan worker was caught ejaculating on her car in the parking lot after she rejected his offer of a date. Ended up in a restraining order. Great incentive for my then 19 year old daughter to get back in class and stay there. This is not where you want to spend the rest of your life working. In the freezing cold chopping up dead birds for 8 hours a day.

Oh my DD, that had to be upsetting for your daughter and you! Had a similar situation with our oldest daughter while she was in college and working as a waitress. Some Mexican guy started bothering her at work. The manager put an end to that, but then he started following her in her car. When she saw him outside her apartment window one night she called the cops. She ended up doing a restraining order too, but he still followed her. My husband hired someone who put an end to it.

Daily Telegraph reporter on leaked Western intel dossier: 'China deliberately covered up evidence' of coronavirus

“They knew there was human-to-human transmission as early as December 6, that’s according to this dossier, when the first evidence emerged of it, and yet it wasn’t until January 20 when they finally admitted that COVID-19 could be transmitted from one person to another.”

Markson pointed out “that was just far too late,” adding that that is why “so many people” around the world “are now sick and dying.”

The file states: "Millions of people
Wuhan after the outbreak and before Beijing lock[ed] down the city on January 23."

The dossier continues with a litany of Chinese defensiveness, stating: “As EU [European Union] diplomats prepare a report on the pandemic, [China] successfully presses Brussels to strike language on [China] disinformation."

Similarly, “As Australia calls for an independent inquiry into the pandemic, [China] threatens to cut off trade with Australia. [China] has likewise responded furiously to US [sic] calls for transparency.”

“The Wuhan Institute of Virology was actually working on, bat-like coronaviruses and they were actually manipulating and genetically modifying bat-like coronaviruses to make them even more deadly"

WHO accused of ignoring its own post-SARS guidelines in early days of coronavirus

By Jan. 2, the Wuhan Institute of Virology completed a mapping of the genetic sequence of the SARS-like coronavirus responsible for the outbreak in Wuhan. The sequence was not reported to the WHO for 10 days, allegedly in violation of both Articles 6 and 7 of the IHR.

Meanwhile, the WHO at the time allegedly received warnings from Taiwan—which is not a member state of the organization and has not had “observer status” since 2017—suggesting individuals in China were becoming ill via human-to-human transmission of a virus.

Under International Health Regulations’ Articles 9 and 10, the WHO is supposed to investigate unofficial reports from sources, member states, or nonmember states, or media reports that would suggest evidence of a public health risk.

But despite the warning from Taiwan, the WHO did not investigate the potential human-to-human transmission of the novel virus at the time, instead relying on China's team.

As usual, the true crime is the cover-up. I just can't help but wonder what the thinking behind covering up something like this. Do they think it will just go away, like an ostrich sticking its head in the sand? Are there other psychological factors at play? Or are there more nefarious reasons?

Yep!
