Australian Gun Law Update

Here's a thought to warm some of your hearts....
From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
Hi Yanks, I thought you all would like to see the real
figures from Down Under.
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to
surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own
government, a program costing Australia taxpayers
more than $500 million dollars.
The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria.....
lone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that
while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not
and criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady
decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins andassaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public
safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.
The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the
hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note Americans, before it's too late!
Will you be one of the sheep to turn yours in?
WHY? You will need it.

Ah the joys of socialism, national socialism, in the UK after our last gun control measures in 96/97 when they banned hand guns, gun related crime rose by over 50% within 3 years. I have no sympathy for the antipodeans, they saw what happened in the UK, and yet they let the same thing happen to them.

It never ceases to amaze me how many people think that banning guns will somehow stop any crime........ It will only compound the problem.....

This was not the first buyback since Port Arthur nor will it be the last. While you may have no pity for antipodeans, criminals, the vigilant and the prepared have a better chance of surviving than innocents who believe everything they're. Whether we have firearms or not, self defence laws Australia wide leave a fully licenced owner of a registered and legal firearm who uses his or her firearm to defend themselves most likely up on murder charges unless the criminal is armed and has shown not only possession of a firearm but intent to use it which in realistic terms given our laws regarding safe storage involving removing a disabling mechanism and storing it in a second locked storage container like a safe. Firearms may also not be stored nor transported loaded in nsw at least unless taking part in a legally approved activity like hunting or feral past control or unless the individual in question is security who is licenced to carry.

Can you think of a likely situation before that buyback that would involve somebody obeying the law being able to use their firearm to defend themselves?

Final quick point - I have lived and worked in both the UK and Australia and I have legally owned, hunted and all of that in both countries. Guns are not illegal to own in either country. They are however restricted, more than some countries and less than other countries but if you do not have a licence and would like one and do not have a criminal conviction, recent suicide attempts or any current AVO or restraining order then I can happily point you in the right direction to get started. My favourite range in the UK actually fires over a motorway although very safely due to an abutment and the road cannot be seen from the rifle firing area. Pistols don't fire over the road. Great people there.

I hope all is well in your neck of the woods and I hope my opinions haven't upset you. I don't get out all that much lately due to work so it's great to have bright people to speak to.

All the best

as far away from "civilisation" as i can get.
I just do not understand the general public, especially in my own country, they are mostly anti gun, afraid of guns, and think having no gun makes them safe, when we all know the opposite is the case.
