Thank you all for your kind words, everyone. Most of us have been down this road at least once. I've personally seen 8 dogs in my lifetime pass on. All mini dachshunds and rat terriers. It's never easy. We always said Button would be our last dog. I'm 72 now and my husband is 75. It's just not wise to accept the reality now of a dog outliving us, so any replacement can't be a small breed, (small breeds live 17-18 years, some longer) or a real young dog. Hopefully we'll both be driving for awhile yet, but ya never know what life will dish out. Mobility and trips to the vet throughout their lives might be more difficult over time. If we ever do get another dog (because of current geopolitical setting & things turn so bad we need a bark/alert dog for our intruder warning system at our BOL) it would likely be a slightly larger dog than Button's 10# of might (ratties don't see size LOL). It would definitely not be a puppy as it could outlive us. And very importantly, it would have to be a smooth/short hair dog as we have lots of sticker burs on our 42 acre BOL cabin place. We've talked about a boxer (female as they are a bit smaller) or a beagle maybe. My Dad raised 8 hunting beagles in Texarkana. Wonderful mid-size dogs. I've only been around 1 boxer and it was a very nice dog. Very loyal, protective of family, friendly/playful and its coat would surely shed those sticker burs easily. I love blood hounds and coon dogs, but they're both a bit large for me (and our city yard, if SHTF doesn't happen). :)

I've always had shelter dogs , their the best.

Where I live they have total freedom (unlike us) they can come and go as they please.

I actually kidnaped this dog , hes been gone a long time now. I had watched this dog for a couple months. the owners had him in the village on a 6 ft. chain and he was beaten with a broom handle , 2 yrs. old not house broken , no training at all. I new who the people were (scumbags) one day they weren't home and i took him. He lived a good life for 8 yrs.

There are times in life that require more drastic intervention.......

ANY dog will make a good alert dog in times of SHTF, dogs have much better hearing than us humans and hear people and vehicles approaching from far away.
I grew up with a medium sized Poodle and that dog was the best alarm dog I ever had, and easy to train too.
since then I've always had Terriers, good rat dogs and they keep the cats out of the garden too.

Agreed, any dog could be an asset. We all have our idea of a breed to be our favorite. I like the large bully breeds, pits the most favorably. The little breeds have the advantage of not needing massive amounts of food though making terriers a great choice. If I could have any dog I’d take the one owned by brad Pitt in the once upon a time in Hollywood movie. A beautiful beast! (I’m talking the dog, not Pitt, but you ladies are welcome to your opinions)!

I looked at the header DOGS FOR SHTF and thought " dear god they are eating dogs in the US like they do in Venezuela !!! " :)

Only democrats eat dogs.

Prove me wrong. Democrats are socialists are communists. Venezuela is socialist. China is communist. Vietnam is communists. I'm sure you can find an exception (ok, South Korea, and they barely survived not becoming communist), but probably 95% of dogs eaten are in communist countries. So, dog eat dog?
