I've been trying to find case studies of actual economic collapses. Most of what I'm finding is case studies of rather mild collapses like those in the U.S. in recent years. But I wanted to find case studies of complete collapses.

The best one I found so far is about Argentina:

According to business weekly, the great depression was the worst economic crisis in all of history, with an estimated loss of 95 billion dollars (in today's dollars). But the lost decade in Japan 1990-2000 is interesting, also the fall of the 1973 oil crisis.

Sounds just like what government would say at first. . . .but there is only so much you can cover up, which is another reason I am glad that hunny and I can provide for ourselves for most of the year. It will be happening here too soon.
