Folks were just talking about what would happen if essential public service staff were laid low with corona or simply decided to self isolate.

Chat went along the usual lines of what would we do without Cops, Firefighters, Nurses, Doctors etc the usual stuff which we preppers have discussed a dozen times over the years, then someone said

" Ok what if the telecoms folks decided to hunker down, y'know the dudes who provide the broadband, internet, telephone, tv services??" How would the online prepper communities like DPF stay in touch if the interweb went off? >>

I dont know we dont appear to have any backup to our online communities, any of you got any suggestions?

well,we have to start useing the old morse code again...can't think of any other way, but I hope and belive, those in power will keep "comms" working as long as possible, take away the web and those fights and scuffles we've seen pics and vids about TP would be multiplied by thousands as people would go ape **** crazy.

I have a HAM radio with no idea how to use it. I have the book "Ham Radios for Dummies".

I was thinking communication via HAM radios...have that on my list, but never got to it. Ugh!

Since internet can be done from home most of the time, I don’t see it being totally affected. BUT clean water, water disposal systems and electricity could be a problem.

I have a deck of cards, a couple board games and a fair amount of reading materials. I think most millennials would just go ahead and commit suicide....

They may as well, they are not trained in any skills that will be needed for the future. I taught my stepson to shoot this winter. He is a big time gamer but did not have any clue how an AR15 or semi-auto shotgun worked. He knows now. I did give him my Mossberg 20 ga. tactical shotgun, so he can now protect his place. He thinks he has the corona virus and is now self quarantined. I hope not for his sake and for the wife who was around him a couple weeks ago.

Good for you UP! Teaching him one of the most important things a person can learn.

I am glad to hear you are teaching to self-protect and the function of weapons UP. If your son needs to, he will probably do what has to be done. On all preppers. Never forget you are responsible for your actions. If you are not ready to die for your family, maybe you don't deserve one. If you are not ready to kill for the protection of your family, you do not need any means of killing. If you are not ready to accept a trial by law for shooting an innocent person...
Beware the overly preached thought of shoot first, if you do not see and KNOW your target, just hunker down a bit. Anybody can kill, only a well trained, much practiced and very concentrated gun bearing protector can decide between life and death situation and have the skill to shoot to wound or shoot to scare. Shoot to kill is the .5 seconds difference to go alive and be a savior or go to prison and leave your family now unprotected...BE careful and be fast. GP

Does anyone thing that the National Guard will confiscate guns like New Orleans after Katrina?

I've been practicing with other weapons.

I recently aquired a compound bow (my first compound bow), but I have lots of experience with archery using a recurve bow, a Japanese-style Yumi bow ("frog's crotch" arrowheads from a Yumi bow are very destructive to living tissue), and a Native American style double bow.

I use 32 inch arrows with a 400 spine. I also have razor-style broadheads.

I want to get a crossbow, but I have other financial priorities at the moment.

Even with no guns, my compound bow, molotov cocktails, my knife collection, and a baseball bat will go a long way toward personal defense.

New Orleans got slapped by the court and had to return or paid for the firearms never returned. But Martial Law is a different critter but I doubt they would do that unless it's a hotspot in a selected area.

Comforting.

Still, I intend to practice more with my bow.

Oddly enough, I was more accurate with my recurve than my compound bow.

The compound bow has an advantage over guns because it's quieter than a gun, and a razor hunting broadhead will penetrate the same soft body armor that will stop a .357 Magnum.

I was talking with a paramedic buddy, he's in one of the big cities. They're down about a dozen guys already. Early on they were getting calls, and later the 'victim' turned out to be CoVid19 positive. So that put all of them into quarantine. And some of them hang out with other EMTs, or are roomies, so that added to the list. I'm not sure how many EMTs work in that town, but this is enough to screw up everyone's schedules. It is a sign of the start of us losing our medical people. They don't die, they may not even get sick, but quarantine is not the place to practice medicine.

I’d suggest you start getting comfortable with ham radio. Even get licensed. If anything, you will learn a lot (not because you need a license in a SHTF situation). I’m licensed and just got mine last Friday. Now I know how to use the damn things and a $30 2M ham radio can be a life saver if we lose internet or phone. Just program in some local repeaters and all the emergency frequencies.

as far as this group staying in touch via ham - that’s not realistic because ham is more regional. At least the radios we would all have and be able to use without being very experienced. You could use exholink but that is realiant on internet. So yeah, not really a good way to keep in touch.

We have some Ham operators on here. Perhaps we should share that information. Maybe Clyde or one of the others can setup some frequencies we can all use if we lose internet. I have several HAM radios and will be mostly listening.

On other forums they issue club or forum specific call signs, EG the Charlie Tango CB radio site issues all members with CT**** callsigns so they can clearly ID allies, Perhaps DPF could start a DPF register of callsigns to radio users ( Ham and CB etc) who want them. EG Clyde would obviously be DPF0001, Rellgar DPF002 etc

Practising with our Compound bows today oddly enough.

Kevin, the National Guard was acting under orders from local authorities in New Orleans, and many were uncomfortable carrying out those orders. The city announced that only law enforcement would be allowed to have guns and ordered the confiscation of guns from the citizens. The US District court ordered the city to stop and to return the guns they had confiscated.

Thank you.

I bought one of these...

oFeng BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio (136-174MHz VHF & 400-520MHz UHF)

With the right antenna high on the roof or in a tree, could it work?

Also purchased 12 of these...

BaoFeng Radio UV-5R Dual Band Two Way Radio (6 Pack) + 6 TIDRADIO-771 Antennas and Speaker Mics + 12 1800mah Batteries + 1 Programming Cable Baofeng Walkie Talkie Ham Radio

Will get them out of the faraday cage and have my husband program them if they will communicate far enough. I bought them for around close to home so our group could stay in touch.

The situation you just said is happening is disastrous for anyone having a car accident, fall, heart attack and of course now this virus. Very disturbing Tex.

Not much will change up on the property, it will be a normal day, food, water and warmth ain't a problem, my son on the other hand, will not leave the Sheriff Department regardless of the situation, he will do his job regardless and I wouldn't expect any less.

He is an upstanding Deputy and man! You should be proud!

I bought 2 hand held Hams. Gave one to daughter.

yes those will work nice. Something like this would be even better tho and can be hooked to a car battery or any 12V. Way better range.

On the handhelds, just use free chirp software and the programming cables to put in the frequencies and also program in all emergency ones. FEMA, races, etc. there is dozens. Jut google it. Also, be sure to do your local fire, police, etc. you can find these frequencies on repeaterbook.com.
Lastly, get a ham license. You won’t regret it!
