As hot air rises, may I suggest you mount a reversing ceiling fan at your highest point, to circulate the upper warm air back toward the ground.

According to Mr. Heater's website (the manufacturer) the Big Buddy heats up to 450 sq ft at 18,000 BTU (max setting). So a 20x20 space is just under the max space that a Big Buddy can heat.
The Portable Buddy (single burner) heats up to 225 sq ft (exactly half the Big Buddy) at 9,000 BTU.
The Big Buddy has three settings, 4,000 (one burner), 9,000 (one burner), and 18,000 BTU (two burner).
I think he is capable of deciding that for himself. I'm just giving him the information so he can make an informed decision.the man is heating a barn to work in - not his living space >> doubt he needs or wants to waste a degree over what's absolutely necessary ....
