I generally have my phones shut off when in my pocket. I mean fully powered down, not just off. I have times each day when I power them on, check email, messages, etc. Once done, powered off again. If someone needs to reach me immediately, they know my work phone and home phone. Otherwise, they'll just have to wait until I get to it.

During the day, messenger is always a better way to reach me (as it's on my laptop), and anyone worth talking to, already knows this about me.
