I have watched Life Below Zero before and it is enjoyable along with the series of Alaska the last Frontier. How much those shows the actual realistics of life I'm not sure since I live the the lower 49s and think the 40s are cold :)

I've watched some of the building off the grid type shows and they all seem to have plenty of power tools but no explanation of where the power comes from, and why are all the houses so huge? usually its just a couple or a couple and a kid .

The first few in the series "Building off the grid" on HGTV weren't monstrosities. But I've only watched a handful of episodes, so maybe some are?
"Montana Mountain Man" used a chainsaw for his cutting, hand tools for cleaning the logs, and pulley system with his truck for lifting large logs into place. It was something like 900 sq ft. Had solar panel for power, and was in process of getting a well for water.
Anyway, I watched some of them just for context in getting general ideas about my BOL.

I've seen a lot of these "building in Alaska" type shows and to British eyes these places are huge, at least they are to me, if I was building a place in the wild it would be much smaller.
when I lived off grid before I spent most of the time outdoors.

I agree with that statement, I'd like to experience some of them just to see how their upkeep is, heating/cooling, cleaning, etc. Why make it more difficult to deal with?

exactly, I lived in a 2 roomed caravan(trailer) with minimal heating, most of my time was spent outside growing my own food, fixing fences and building sheds from scrap timber.

I guess a big house is subject to interpretation. Some people would consider 900 sqft to be a big house and to others it would be tiny. People typically build what they want, or what they can afford.
It's obvious that all these off grid building shows, especially the ones in Alaska, are using generators to charge batteries for their cordless tools. They just don't show the generator.
