Here in FL, it is sometimes the no-name storms that seem to hit us worse than named hurricanes. Of course, even a small tornado is disastrous if it is YOU it hits....so can't really make light of it. Thankfully you only had to deal with a power outage and being trapped a bit. Stay safe! (everyone appreciates prepping when the lights go down)......

I guess the tornado was worse then originally reported, 36 homes and 2 business damaged, I-5 is finally moving with one lane still closed, we still unable to go anywhere due to our roads taken out, WDOT is cutting a by-pass so traffic should resume next Wednesday if not sooner, we are expecting another storm any minute now giving us more heavy rains so the saga continues

Mav, you're one of the ones here that I worry the least about. Glad your family is close enough for you to help them too. Other than the roads being out I expect your all fairly comfortable.

Dang Mav if it's not fires it floods!! Never happens when you need the rain, Glad that all are safe

Got another foot of snow yesterday. Was out plowing again today but had to shut down early. Broke a winch cable and had to get some tools to fix it. Got about 2 miles left to plow, that will have to wait until tomorrow. The wind is blowing hard and the snow is drifting. We should have a break in the weather tomorrow with more snow forcasted for Wednesday thru Sunday. It's been flooding where my kids live. My son built on high ground but the river near his place is as high as it's ever been. Some roads have washed out in his area too. They need more cold weather to freeze up the snow pack so the water levels drop.

Looked at regional flood modelling and did some of my own prior to purchasing a house where I am currently located.
Australia only has max 150y of recorded rainfall. There is only a 63.4% chance of a 1:100y event occurring in any single 100y period. Statistically very possible to go 200y without having any 1:100y events. I think half of infrastructure is build within current calculated 1:100 flood zones. Not so smart.

5 Years ago there were some big rain events and the state gov (NSW) redesigned and upgraded all major dam spillways.

It amazes me that most people in the world would make their biggest purchase of their life, their home, without even looking at flood plains. You used to have to go to the county office and dig thru old charts, now you can just google it, yet most still give it no thought. I saw where almost 70 percent of the world lives in low costal areas. Here, I'm at 1100 ft above sea level. If I see flooding were all in trouble and need to start collecting animals.

Sydney getting smashed, record winds - scary hail etc. Looks like the world is getting more unstable.

Philippines evacuating 800,000 due to typhoon Melor

hmm, you guys getting hit by a tornado now that something one doesn't hear often from the land of OZ, "364 tornadoes have occurred across NSW from 1795 to June 2003" while in the US we get close to a 1000 a year, it sure seems like the world is becoming more unstable.

If floods or slides hit any of our homes then there is something seriously wrong in the world. While floods and slides are very common here, a good number of hard hit places aren't anywhere near flood plains, in many area's the water table is already high leaving very little room for absorption from heavy rains, while we get a lot of rain here we normally don't get 17" to 19" of rain in 3 days. Ironically this summer I was worried about my creek and well water being low, I think the next time we pray for rain... we really should put limits on the rain we pray for like 2" every 3 days no more praying for lots of rain.

i read.where a hospital had called a nurse to come into work, after all that snow fell in their area.she refused to go in.on account it was to unsafe and dangerous to go in.her boss insisted, and sent someone from the hospital to get her.that person ended up in the ditch next to her driveway.and thats when she called for a ambulance, while she stayed inside where she's safe from the storm..the boss called 1 or 2 hours later to find out why she's not there.she told her boss.the person she had sent out is now in their ER...and she was finally able go into work a couple days later,in which the boss wrote her for a no show..i would of quiet that job on that day.and if i could of.i would of reported that boss for that.especially seeing how the employees that were there, could of handled the situation themselves..as well as anyone that (might) of been able to go in and work..

One of my coworkers called in yesterday. She got 16 inches of snow at her place (an hour north of mine and much higher elevation). She has a really long driveway, and spent the weekend trying to get to the road. She had only made 1/2 of the way as of yesterday. This, to me, I is what prepping is all about. You can't control Mother Nature, but you can ensure that you have enough food, fuel and needed supplies to wait out whatever she throws at you.
