OK I have a question for y'all. What type of ammo is best to stock up on for a handgun fmj or hollow points? I know that hollow points are better due to expansion but when I go buy ammo I hate to pass up the fmj because I can buy 50 for the same price as 20 hollow points.
Hunting big game you want hollow points. Anything else FMJ will do. I only buy hollow points for my precision lrg cal rifle.

I'm stocking shotgun ammo,'cause I've a license for that gun,any other ammo is illegal to me,the Finland-thing, hopefully next week have a chance to start my .22 collection
Shotguns are very versatile. If you have to pick only one, that one will do the trick by switching ammo types.

it's been a while,since I wrote that,now I go for 12ga,22lr and 7,62x54r.
Im new here, just reading and catching up. I have been prepping for a while, but something is telling me to get ready. Last time I had that gut feeling, acted on it, and it saved a lot of lives that night. So, Im definately upping my prep game to not just operational, but actual strategic survival.

but, hope you don't just concentrate on guns and ammo, those are only a part of my preps, one part is in the medical field,I got myself back to school
and took my paramedic exam, which opened another door,I'm now the new combat medic in our "National Guard",learning curve is steep, but I like it.
perhaps I have time next summer for some holiday time,it's been almost 5 years soon from the last one.

it's always good to trust your gut feeling,I do the same, seldom does it go wrong.

Jontte, absolutely! That is what I meant. Before I was into individual short term prepping like protection, gear, individual med kits, being able to get ro a location and have what I needed to carry on etc... But now I am looking at bulk long term stationary with longbterm mobile survival options to include not only ground, but water. Also looking at deception as a tool to not be noticed like I would have been before.

long term survivability is the one, sure had I all the money in the world,I would relocate in a heart beat, get myself everything, but for now, small steps
forward.

Get JHP picked up a box of 50 Winchester white box FMJ 9mm for I think 25$? Not as cheap as FMJ but get a few hundred than buy some FMJ to cycle threw and shoot. They will not perform as good as hydro shock I’m sure but much better than FMJ

I’m under the mindset that one should stock up and practice with what one carries as their defensive rounds, I generally don’t purchase plinking rounds or cheap ammo for my defensive firearms unless I’m breaking a new firearm in. In my opinion it’s better to have 1000 rounds of very reliable and accurate ammo than 5000 rounds of questionable ammo in other words reliable and accurate over abundance ;)

Its not everyday the average Person can walk into a store or gun shop and drop a ton of cash for lots of ammo so what I practice is about every or every other pay check buy a couple of boxes of ammo . I have a shooting box that I keep boxes of ammo to shoot from and stacks of metal ammo boxes that I store ammo in . I'v been doing this for couple of decades and I'v gotten to the point that I don't want anymore ammo . I got enough . I also reload so I pick up reloading supplies from time to time .

Any ammo you can get your hands on will increase in value, but laws may change, and just mere possession can make you a criminal. Buy whatever ammo your gun takes. If you find yourself overstocked in a SHTF scenario, you can always trade away excess.

I keep plenty of ammo . How you store it is more important than how much you have . I keep them in original box stacked in surplus metal ammo cans with a oxygen absorber pack . I can open a box of ammo that Iv had stored like that for 30 plus years and they look new .

I've been able to find Hornady XTPs cheaply enough to load mostly HP ammo in pistols. XTPs for practice, Gold Dots for Self Defense. For really high volume, like 45 ACP I use cast for practice.

Revolvers either take cast, XTPs or some premium bullet like FTXs

For high volume rifles, my Mini-14 absolutely hates FMJ, they are all over the place at 100 yards. So I use mostly 55 grain varmint bullets for practice. You can get Midway Dogtown bullets pretty cheap, but whatever the cheapest soft point 55 grain I can find at the time is what I load. They all shoot about the same in the Mini-14.

Other rifle calibers are for hunting or precision not volume so no FMJs there either. Premium bullets like Nosler Accubonds, and Hornady ELD-X for hunting, Sierra BTHPs for precision.

Is your Mini a newer one or one of the older ones? I know they updated the barrel in 2008 or something. My newer 14 rocks with a 2-7 variable :)

I'm a fan of defensive ammo for defensive purposes, but I prefer bulk ammo for everything else. 80/20 like the poster above would bankrupt me fast. I'm 95/5 because in SHTF a bullet is a bullet, and the more I have of them for SD or trading, the better. I doubt anyone will pay/trade more for a HP bullet in a SHTF scenario.

Semi-older one.
Here is FMJ vs Soft point @100 yards

Red lines point to FMJ bullet holes. Bullet holes in bottom target are soft point, ~4" group. This is with iron sights. I can ping a 10" gong @100 yds all day offhand with the soft points.
