Vehicle loans are not long term thus shouldn't be purchased on credit in my opinion, one is better off saving 400 a month for 3 years and walk into a dealership with 14,400 cash and make a deal, if one can't Afford putting away 400 a month for 3 years they sure as hell can't afford a loan

I've been learning a lot about this issue recently. I wasn't always the best with this (especially in college) but getting a handle on my debt and spending is a big part of my 2019 plans. First I had to learn not to spend on things I don't need - well to be honest I'm still learning this. But once I really did the math and figured out how much my debt was costing me I got serious about it and that's my goal for the next few years. I don't have as many student loans as some might, but those will still take a while.

People consider me to be cheap, frugal, tightwad etc. it’s a badge I wear with honor. :)
I cut sponges in half, freeze brillo pads, price my toilet paper by the square footage etc. I have enough preps built up for everyday items that I can wait for a good deal.
Saving money is important. They way you spend your money and use your resources is just as important. Younger people typically don’t understand this.

I look at it as every dime I spend, is one dime less I can spend on the things I want/ need. Buy on sale, use coupons, hunt for bargains. It all adds to the being able to buy the things that are important. No cable TV, use antenna, no buying coffee out, brew it at home. No credit card debt. If you manage what you have, you can make it go much farther. Drives me crazier than normal when somebody talks about living from paycheck to paycheck, but they have Cable TV - plus all the extra channels, drink Starbucks specialty drinks, eat out 5 days a week and buy the latest greatest Smart Phone. If you ask them why they don't cut back on that stuff, they act like it is a life necessity.

I honestly think a house is one of the few things that should ever be worth going into debt for. I like your example of if you can’t afford to save each month then you can’t afford a loan.

Don't forget the one's that's depending on their tax returns to pay on.or pay off their car notes mortgages to what ever.they stand to lose more then the folks on food stamps. To me that means a increase in rioting

Who the hell does that?

Most folks that get returns SPEND them. They don't pay off bills. (nor should they be depending on a return to pay a MONTHLY bill). As for SNAP, I'm pretty sure they'd come up with some emergency measure to assist there if the shutdown continues to the end of the month. Then again, not like those recipients are voting GOP anyhow, so not like he's losing votes.

Well put. We use a combination of antenna and streaming services to basically watch anything we want. Saved me almost $200 a month right there, and I can still see any shows I'm interested in.

For phones, we went with Boost, ditching Verizon, and now pay only $100 a month for 3 phones (we were able to get our daughter a phone for free basically, so she always has one). We used to pay over $200 with VZ. Saved nearly $100 a month there.

For gas, we often get $50 gas cards for $40 shopping at our local grocery store. We also use point reward programs.

Food, we shop at Winn Dixie and use coupons, and supplement it with BOGOs at Publix (our local grocery store), and other discount grocery stores. And sometimes produce stands. (though hoping to actually make the garden a reality this year). And we use coupons before our big monthly shopping trips. We also do menu planning (based on first scouting out the sale items). So if chicken is on sale, we'll plan more chicken meals, etc. Pork, beef, you get the drift.

We pretty much break even on chicken feed vs. buying eggs, but at least we know what we're getting with our own eggs.

We drive an old, but paid for truck.

Clothes, we often buy at second-hand stores or off clearance racks. Unless it's for an occasion or work attire, and then I'm OK spending money for nice clothes, but even then, there are plenty of second-hand sources for this too. I've gotten some very nice (and formerly expensive) suits this way, and coats, even fur coats for the wife. We even had a friend who owned an upscale second-hand boutique, where my wife got all kinds of designer, but second-hand stuff for the same cost as Walmart stuff. (like MK or Coach purses, designer shoes, etc.). They just don't LOOK like second-hand stuff.

Restaurants, there are lots of reward club ones, and AARP discount, and many have deals for 2 people where you get an appetizer, free dessert, etc. for a low price.

Hotels, we use the Choice chain and their rewards options, and often stay nights for free. As our friends are far and wide, and we like to go to conventions and ren fests, etc. we stay at hotels often enough.

Just lots of ways to save money. If you really want to. Gives you a higher standard of living, without the cost of it.

Anyone have any major plans for the new year? I'm going to make smaller vegetable gardens and attempt to get them healthier.

I think ive been spreading myself too thin in past years. Once I start planting, it's hard for me to stop.

I'm right there with you on that one. I invested a LOT of time last spring making a beautiful 30x50 garden. Got it planted and was soon harvesting wonderful food....then the bermuda grass said, "Watch this!"

I'm still trying to find my garden.

Only have 8 more payments and the farm is ours! Going to try to find $ to get a new deeper well drilled. Ours is at the top of the water table and if it drops any we are in trouble.
Going to try to make a lot of necessary repairs to the outbuildings on the farm.
Going to try to greatly increase my canning and dehydrating this year. Watching 5 grandkids 7 days a week (four are under 3yo) Last summer made it impossible for me to can anything.

Because of the gov shutdown and the way that the stockmarket is behaving.i need to step up on my Prepping. I figure we'll have big problems if the gov shutdown goes into February. On account there'll be civil unrest from cost to cost from ppl that won't be able to buy food.i talked with my sis about the possibility of the shutdown going into feb.on account she's disabled from a car accident a few years back..she's on disability and gets foodstamp.

I agree! Things are escalating quickly. I’m trying to escalate my preps but it’s hard without much $.

February? Of??? 2019? 2020? 2021?

Honestly, I think this is as big as BREXIT for the UK. If we do or do not get the wall, it will fundamentally change the USA. Think about that.

Both sides are digging in. At the current rate, I'll say there is a real chance of the standoff going permanent, just like Congress has permanently refused to do a budget. When was the last time they had a real budget and not just a lame 'CR' I looked it up, 2015. And that was the first budget in 6 years.

Trump will not back down, he has nothing to lose. Democrats will not back down, they have everything to lose. If snowflakes thought they took of the gloves before, just wait. It's going to get really ugly.
I wholeheartedly agree!!

Store away, rice, beans, pasta, salt, sugar, flour, put in food grade buckets you can get for free from grocery and bakeries. It's cheap long stored dry goods that will sustain your family. Check out our threads on low budget prepping.

We had one of our bulls break his leg in a badger hole so we got 850# of burger from him + hubby got a deer. I have enough staples to last a year but want to lay in more. I canned a lot before I started babysitting the 5 grand babies (four are under 3 yo) 7 days/week. I canned nothing at all last summer, was too exhausted every day. Hoping to sell stuff on eBay and take all monies and stock up on white and red wheat berries. Found a place that ships in bulk. With 13 in our extended families, I just worry I won’t have enough to care for everyone if need be.

Oh how I get what you're saying. . . . life gets busy and it just makes it harder when you have little ones under foot. I have been introducing granddaughter slowly to prepping myself, but I am also not having little ones everyday underfoot or my life would be much slower. I have take the oldest granddaughter out in the garden with me since she was about 1, when she started walking, the critters, well by about 6 months. :) I wanted them familiar with her and get her scent. Once she started walking she was running after the goats. Now she will sit and wait for them to come to her. Apple Jacks helps :) . She also is a big help in the kitchen now days. I had her canning pickles (oven canning) this last summer after we picked and she loves to crack eggs to scramble to dehydrate. And she can "scrub, scrub, scrub" like there is no tomorrow. Key is make it a game. The two youngest are 9 mo and 4 mo so I have a little time before I get to work on them but you can bet I will have all the granddaughters out with me when they come for a visit.

What kind of things are you selling on ebay?

Yeah, my main garden is going to need to be bush hogged! I’ve heard that it’s good to let it overgrow for the soil. I keep thinking this so I don’t feel guilty....
That's one of the benifits of living in a semi arid region, few weeds. I rototill between the rows a couple times during the summer and use a hoe to weeds around the plants. We put mulch (from cleaning out the coop) around the trees and berry plants. That keeps the weeds down around the trees and saves on water. Every few weeks I run the mower between the fruit trees and the grapes and berry plants. We really have very little hand weeding to do.
