Modified clothing for the EDC prepper

More and more preppers I meet are doing some interesting stuff with their EDC clothing, Poorer preppers like myself tend to modify or tailor proprietary brands of clothing to suit our own needs, I’m always adding extra pockets, re-enforcement patches, Fastex webbing and hangers, kit hanging loops, elasticised draw cords etc to my clothing. Equally many preppers choose to buy and wear clothing primarily designed for soldiers or police officers such as Combat Jackets, SAS smocks, M65s, Concealed Carry Jackets, Specialist Vests etc. And not forgetting our passion for tactical cargo pants either. Some folks spend huge amounts on first rate specialist outdoor clothing and still end up messing on with a sewing machine to get the product they want.

Also and very importantly in this ever more uncertain and violent world parents are also seeking specialist clothing for their children. GPS tagged clothing and shoes for the very young, GPS tagged phones for errant teens spring to mind but equally the enlightened urban families both prepper and ordinary types as well as the kids themselves have identified a need for even more specialist clothing.

This includes slash proof and knife resistant vests, hoodies, smocks and jackets for kids !! (What a terrible indictment of today’s society until you realise that in London alone over 50 kids have been stabbed to death in recent years which makes teen prepping more important than ever it was before.)

Slash resistant clothing is now very popular in places such as Washington DC, New York, London, Birmingham, Rome, Berlin and Tokyo for teens as well as adults. It is a newish product range some city preppers may wish to consider as well.

There is also a trend among our teens and city dwellers to reduce the risk of becoming victims of muggings and street robberies by wearing clothing that allows them to conceal the inevitable collection of electronic gadgets they have these days. Firstly it helps them reduce the risk of being targeted as in many cases they can conceal their personal kit about their person instead of in bags and rucksacks.

Jackets, Hoodies and Vests that look just like ordinary outdoor civilian fashion clothing but have huge numbers of concealed pockets and hidden routes within the clothing to route phone speaker / headphone wires etc, This again is a development that can in many cases be beneficial to the urban prepper community as you can very often carry a full EDC load in the pockets rather than in a bag.

I like the bulletproof backpacks myself. If I had a small child, they would so have these.

i wouldn't buy the Specialist Scottevest range Men and Women for one reason only..they scream, come and get me,i have money

I suppose you could say the same about folks who wear stuff like 5:11 or Mechanixwear or Danner boots, Oakley shades as well, I always go up a notch when I see folks who dress like CP operators :)

I'm much more "gray man" in mentality. Give me durable fabrics, clothes that ventilate, and lots of pockets, then finally, be sure I look more like a weekend hiker (picture Jeff Probst from Survivor) vs. Rambo, and I'm right there.

Of course, main goal, while trying to get to my location, will be to remain unseen, but if I am spotted, I don't want them thinking Rambo.

I wear generic cargos like Craghoppers Kiwis and any jackets I tend to modify myself by removing velcro where possible and replacing it with buttons or catches

my fav type of pants at time.is the ones that look like the bottom half of cover/over-alls.with the 2 lil pockets on the right pants leg for utility knife,or what ever.and the hoop on the left pants leg for a hammer..the regular pockets are idea size(s) for my everyday carry..

When working in the yard / garden I ware blue jeans and flanel or t shirt depending on the season . When out in the great outdoors then I ware Military surplus or Tactical ware . At work Im forced to ware business casual . Something I have noticed is blue jeans stand out in the woods like a **** in a punch bowl as much as I like them for working outside I dont ware them on hikes or range time .

Since I can go from hot, rain and snow in one day, I have packed green wool pants and heavy brown duck canvas carhartt's and have wool long johns top and bottom, both my shirts are long sleeve wool. My cloths are the norm for the area on the streets and in the country, non militaristic non threatening yet concealing.

To much thought put into what others think of some one in camo . The ones others are having trouble with may be wareing plain clothes . I use Military camo from several Countries and have had people walk within couple of feet of me and not see me with a 52" rifle and large optics . I did not need to worry about looking threatening because they didn't even know I was there . At the same time I went through Krystals drive through waring the old Swiss heavy Alpenflage and the girl working there went and got a Manager , He wanting to show off in front of his workers was bound to get answers and aske You going hunting ? I looked at him and said no just shooting and left them more confused than before .

Since my hair is very short, being white, having a Confederate flag and the Yellow Rose of Texas tattooed, if I wore camo's in Portland, Seattle, Olympia I would probably get shot them thinking I was a white supremacist/skin head or a member of other hate groups since they all wear camo's, I would certainly look threatening to some. As the o'l saying goes, perception is everything ;)

Environment must be considered, wearing woodland or desert cammo or hunting orange in a city after TSHTF screams "survivalist" and will attract undue attention, equally wearing sneakers, chinos and a metalicca t shirt in the boonies is just being a bullet magnet, we need to blend into our environments.

NR Im sure you remember what Tshirts the SAS and German GSG9 targeted when taking down the hijackers in one of the first sucsessful rescues on a airliner . I think this was the first use of flash bangs .
