Gday both, also an SA, new to the forum and to prepping. Im in the suburbs of Adelaide, but looking at moving further out into a more rural area.

Stuggling to find any like minded people in my circle of friends, the ones that have heard of prepping which is limited anyway, think its some wacko American thing and that it doesnt apply to us here. How are you finding that with people you know?

Hey there
Welcome to the forum.

I too find it hard to find like minded people in my circle of friends.
only two people know I prep but that's all they don't really ask any more questions or want to know.
I recently showed my Girlfriend the show Doomsday Preppers which she really enjoys so I think in more time she will become a little more open to my prepping.
I have another friend I can talk to about Disaster scenarios but I only see him once a week.

I hear ya! Ive been thinking about the sorts of community groups and clubs that might have people with a similar mindset. I am looking at joining a local gun club for that reason, not because I want to get armed to the teeth etc, but hoping it has some like minded people.

I did the same with my wife as far as Doomsday Preppers. Before she watched a few episodes of the show she thought my preps etc were a waste of time and money, but she is now on board at least in principal, so fingers crossed your girlfriend comes around too.

I'm selective who I tell - I have a friend in Adelaide wants to start prepping, but single mum on welfare, finds it hard.
Showed a few episodes to the cook - mainly the food storage tips. We have increased our pantry size a little, but $$ is tight, but I'm lucky to have a lot of Army gear, plus my own camping gear I've amassed over the years.
Most people see it as a silly American idea, the she'll be right attitude still exists, but for the most part society is very complacent. I guess I was one of them till I realised that there's nothing wrong with getting a little prepared not just for today, but for tommorrow too.

Completley agree jayjay, nothing wrong with having a bit put back just in case. The best way Ive found to increase the food preps is just buy an extra tin or two when something is on special, it doesnt seem like much at first but do that every time you go shopping and the extra $10-$15 spend soon adds up over time.

Totally agree - if one spends $10 week extra, thats 5-10 tins food, up to 520 tins food/yr. That's just food. It does add up too - I'm only new to this - but try to limit my purchases to Aussie made food, so that limits my buying power, but that's my choice. I'm weekly at Woolies/IGA for specials. Campbells have a mega store nth subs, but not always cheaper. Hardest to find is tinned meats - on special $2 tin, so on the budget it means less volume. But, I guess its a slow process. Our pantry is getting bigger slowly, but not enough to really last any length of time, but, while we can, we'll just keep those extra 2-5 tins a week.

Do you have a RitePrice grocery nearby? They sell mainly out of date or close to use by date tins, but they sometimes have some with plenty of time left before the expiry date. I picked up a dozen bigger tins of tuna that were 3 for $4 and have a 2016 date on them, havent seen them there since, but always keeping an eye out. They often have a bit of the Dick Smith brand too so supporting the Aussies there.

No, only IGA & Woolies. Whenever we travel always on the lookout for cheap finds. When we cross the border we shop at Aldi in Vic, a lot cheaper, on par for quality.

I'm heading to Vic in a few weeks, Ill have to check Aldi out on the way back. Anything in particular to look out for there?

Canned food cheaper, rice, pasta all cheaper and good quality. Not as big a choice as woolies or coles, but big enough.
