Went to a meet-up for a local camping group.

My wife decided she thought we shouldn't join, because they sounded too much like "glampers".

lol, I created an elitist.

One thing though, they all were all about expensive gear, if you didn't have a $2K canoe and a $500 tent, you weren't serious.

My poor old Discovery 119 would look pitiful next to all that Carbon Fiber glory on a trip.

Sounded like they planned trips to some really nice places, if only they didn't want to camp only in campgrounds with amenities, we would have joined.

I’m not against campgrounds with amenities per say, but undo find much more pristine and beautiful places out off the beaten path. My wife doesn’t have much stamina anymore, so regular campgrounds are just easier for her. As far as ‘keeping up with the joneses ‘, I couldn’t care less. The only person I care to impress now days is me.

I like the very minimalist approach to camping, by most people's standards anyway. Now days most of my camping is with my 4 wheeler so I can carry only the very basic items necessary for roughing it. Ice chest for fresh food (steaks, prawns, osyters, etc), a couple fold up chairs, roll up table, gas powered blender (for making margaritas of course), chain saw for fire wood, tarp for shelter and a padded cot for sleeping.

I enjoy tbe campgrounds. Even then.i'll go with water there.and no electric. And if i need to recharge any battries or what ever.i'll just get out the car lighter power conveter and battery charger.then wa ya.i got fresh battries the next day.and the best thing about the coverter and charger.it'll probably take them at least 3 to 5 days of stright useage, before i'll notice the car battery run down any.

i'm not one for regulated camp sites, was part of a group that talked about "wild camping" but only spent one night in the wilds, the rest of the time they camped on sites with club houses, toilet and shower blocks and a shop, not my thing, I prefer to be alone in the wild, no amenities but what I carry on my back.

We call that "backpacking." Basically, if you take everything with you on your back to where you are sleeping, it's backpacking.

Although, I have cached food on a backpacking trip.

"Camping" as opposed to "backpacking" could mean anything from staying in tent you took to the campsite by vehicle, to staying in a luxury cabin with all the amenities.

There are many places to boondock IE, dry camp. It's camping without hook ups. Plenty of places to go for this style of camping. IIRC a lot of places are free.
State lands, national forest and BLM lands are all free for (non campground) camping, hunting and fishing. At least around here they are anyway.

I’ve never camped in a Walmart parking lot yet and can’t say I’m thrilled with the idea. But if you’re traveling far and are tired at least it’s a place to pull off the road and get some rest. It’s nice to have access to restrooms and almost any supplies.

I think Walmart will let you overnight but any longer you have to ask as well.
I don’t know about now during this event but normally they like campers. Campers tend to buy groceries and supplies and Walmart tends to have huge parking lots so loosing a few far out spaces is no big deal for them.

Still see a few RV's in the Walmart parking lot. Safer parking (patrolled) and free. Somebody parked /camped there could also watch for when the lines are gone or short. Now what will happen if it really hits the fan, is anybodies guess.
