While I understand there's different thoughts on bug out or dig in. I think there's something to be said for living your prep. Not sure if I read it here or another site but if you plan on bug out just go homestead route. And that's what I'm doing.....my thoughts are this. During the great depression a lot of families have given accounts that they didn't even notice a huge difference in daily life. The reason being that their farms or homesteads whatever you want to call them. We're so self sufficient that the majority of everything you needed was there. Not saying everyone can grow cocoa beans for chocolate but they didn't starve and were OK. Just a thought. Live the prep. Prep to live.

I live my preps here at home, homesteading/farming has it's challenges and one rule that's always on top of the list 'Mother Nature gets a vote too" In other words, your preps need to be seasonal. My BOL is actually a cabin, if need be we can move our operations to the BOL though on a much smaller scale but doable.

It is true starvation wasn't a major issue for the majority although malnutrition was a major concern. Most of the studies were based on the effects of the Great Depression without taking into account the migration from the Dust Bowl and those that remained on the homestead/farm, the one's that were affected by the Dust Bowl event had long term chronic illnesses as a direct result killing some. The malnutrition also caused illnesses by lowering the immunity in both events. The primary reason why starvation didn't materialize on a large scale was two fold, most homes during that time had gardens and had the knowledge to raise crops plus families that had gardens, the second reason was Government assistance, also keep in mind a good part of the nation wasn't really effected by the Great Depression. None of which materialized in to a TEOTWAWKI and even a SHTF wasn't wide spread, the biggest hits was on the manufacturing base and those that relied on banks or in debt to the banks (not talking about the wall street type) never the less the majority felt it in one way or another.

Most people back during them times were vastly different than today, most could have made things from scratch not so much today, The old ways are looked down upon today and much of the art of yesterday is near extinction, the days of barn raising are over though many of us try to cling to it today. Today complacency rules.
