This should be a place for you to post discuss and improve on things. Think of it as an inventors section. I personally look for multiple uses in everyday things. For example: in my bug out bag, instead of carrying an axe I carry an E-tool (dig cook chop saw defend et cetra) so if your like me post some ideas :)

One of my favorites, a hand-crank radio with flashlight and cell phone charger.
I'm a big fan of multi-use items.

Majority of our gear are dual purpose in our B.O.B/I.N.C.H bags, very small example. Sewing kit, undyed unbleached threads for sewing clothes to stitching an arm, tincture iodine for water treatment to wound care to sterilizing agent. Fishing line from fishing to snares to early warning trip wire to stitching. Suunto MC-2 compass the mirror and magnifier can be use for signaling, shaving or use to reflect light, not just for reading the dial, magnifier can be use for fire starting to pulling slivers and stingers not just for map reading. My flint that's part of my fire starting kit can be used for as a knife to sharping my blades not just for fire starting, jute or oakum twine can be used for fire tinder not just for tying stuff up. Cotton balls and cotton gauze can be used for making char not just for treating wounds. Sugar is not just a sweetener but also for treating wounds. Last but not least KNOWLEDGE ;)

Multiple possibilities and usage from the smallest of things

As far as choices between the e-tool or the axe, one's geographics will dictate the importance between the two ;) for me the axe is far more important if only given the choice of the two.

My own redneck engineering:

Automatic chicken feeder:

Holds enough food for a couple of days, making it a bit easier, especially to go on a short trip.
With two of them in the coop, we could theoretically be gone for 4 days, which is about the water capacity also, for their waterer.

Automatic Rabbit Feeder:

Inside, the box is divided into sections. Each rabbit has a separate feed chute, and separate water bottle holder. The box only allows the metal nozzle to stick out, so they can't chew up the bottle. I also extended the volume of the water bottle by using a 2 liter bottle with a PVC extension, to increase capacity, meaning we only have to check feed and water every other day for them. (and we can do it for all 3 bunnies, by only entering one pen).

I thought this was a pretty neat idea: Hot Glue Matches. Put a glob of hot glue on matches, keep them in a matchbox, then when you need some hot glue, light a match and you have a few drops of hot glue you can use in a pinch:

For saving money making your own survival kits/web gear, consider shopping at thrift shops for old camera bags.

Many small camera bags have belt loops, are made out of heavy black nylon, and can be used to replace magazine/ammo pouches, store survival kits, guns, etc., and don't look out of place in civilized society.

At thrift shops, many can be had for less than $5.00.

Looks like those hot glue matches burn real good. Would make good survival matches.
