When I lived in Missouri I rented a place that had an open pond for the sewer. There were thirty or more trailers dumping all the waste right into an open air pond. I figured it would stink horribly, but suprisingly there was no odor. It was covered in green algae, so really it didn't even look too bad. Luckily there was a tall chain link fence keeping kids out of it!

Sh1t at the end of the day is full of nutrients that can be harnessed and converted to feed crops and food fish, by utilising the natural nitrogen cycle the assorted bacteria Aerobic and Anaerobic turn shit into fertilser that reeds absorb help algae grow which feeds plankton and tiny aquatic critters which in turn feed the fish.

Evaporated urine can be used to make black powder, ordinary pee is great for tanning leather.

And of course you can build hydroponic systems as well to reuse nutrients from waste.

I hadn't heard of urine being used for black powder before. Being able to make it yourself would be worth learning.

When in Tudor England discovered black powder for canons we found we had plenty of everything except ( I think) Saltpeter, so the King sent out hundreds of men by Royal command to hit everywhere that deposits of dried urine could be found, stables, homes, tanneries etc it was punishable by death to stop the collectors even if they dug up the floor of your home.

Here you go mon ami

Oh and Batshit is also good for it as well.

I made black powder from my home chemistry set when I was in middle school. There is plenty of documentation on the web on how to make saltpeter from urine. It just takes a little time. The powdered charcoal is easy enough. I suppose finding pure sulfur would be the hard part for some people.

hygiene seems to so difficult, even in the best of times,we've had the "shits" hit the hospital so bad wards had to be closed and cleaned from top to bottom,as visitors had it very hard to grasp the need to ; wash your hands with soap, dry them and then use sanitizer...so what would happen in less ideal times??

The problem is as my wife will tell you most EU and UK hospitals basically run around the 85 to 95 percent occupancy so no one ward can ever be fully taken out of service to be deep cleaned, then aired and rested for a month as was the case years ago. And you have the insanity of centralisation that makes matters worse as they close community hospitals and clinic and move everything into single large multi purpose facilities. So when say TB or Winter Vomiting bug ( Norovirus) inevitably breaks out HUGE numbers of both patients and staff are taken ill. And of course if the hospitals are modern sealed multi story air conditioned structures when someone on the ground floor sneezes the bacteria or viruses get circulated round the whole hospital infecting everyone. Most modern large hospitals are just death traps, many dont even have opening windows or filters on each floor for the HVAC. Hospitals will obviously never the healthiest of places BUT common sense says they should be single story buldings with opening windows and wards that can be isolated and taken out of service. But hospitals regardless of location are no longer ran by Matrons, instead its Accountants in charge.

As for hand washing YES I agree but every door handle, work top, light switch, etc should be coated in anti bacterial / anti fungal copper as well.
Todays hospitals are high tec death traps.

copper seems to be too expencive to use, haven't seen that luxury any place here.
and large units are the tune of today, atleast the ward I was last time seems to have a capable head nurse who runs a tight ship; you get the shits, you stay home, only after the last sympthoms are done,so to speak, you wait 48h then you can come to work, not sooner,if you do,you are in some deep doo-doo as she will chew you to bits.

what I find "amazing" is that the ER send patients to the wards with noro and very often don't bother to report that illness to the ward..

Odd but very many chromium plated handles, switches etc are actually chrome plating over a copper and brass alloy !!!!

Even with sealed up environments there are UV filters that kill mold, bacteria and viruses.

A good friend works at a local hospital - the norovirus blew though it and caused a lot of problems recently. He was telling me that people in the emergency room were throwing up creating aerosols with the virus - then the staff started getting it and it got bad for a week or so...

Many years ago I worked as an orderly in a small private hospital. We were bought out by a big healthcare firm, and they started implementing cost cutting measures.

One of the cost cutting measures, I KID YOU NOT, was that I was only allowed to use one glove when catheterizing patients. I successfully lobbied the management to allow me to use two gloves because they COULD NOT show me how I could possibly use one glove and perform the catheterization in a sterile manner.

HYGIENE PROTOCOLS

If you think the greatest risk to your group / family is going to be starvation or violence then you may be very much off the mark, it will more likely be disease or infection that kill off most victims and the bulk of the country’s population. Sanitation failure, dirty water, bugs, food poisoning, rodents, disease (common ones more so than exotic ones) will kill more than any other reason.

If you need to be paranoid about anything then it should be hygiene, hygiene in the home, hygiene in the kitchen, hygiene when coming into contact with strangers or late arriving group members.

In a crisis for example economic collapse you will need to consider the following protocols.

Patrols to fill in and disinfect all pools / ponds/ puddles that are not used by the group over a large around the retreat to stop stagnant water hosting disease spreading biting insects.

No footwear or clothes that have been used in patrolling/ foraging / agricultural work / cesspit digging

to be allowed anywhere near the kitchen or food prep / storage areas.

Anyone on kitchen / food prep duties who leaves the work area must wash again before re-entering the work area, especially if going for personal ablutions.

All toilet habits must finish with a good wash with an anti-bacterial hand cleanser.

No one with so much as a sniffle to be allowed near the kitchen / food prep storage areas during the first 6 months of the crisis.

Consider all late arrivals to be quarantined for at least 10 days during first 6 months of crisis.

All suspicious food sources (old tins etc) to be treated with absolute caution (food taster volunteers!)

Cleaning within the home / retreat is to be of a standard that would satisfy conditions for an operating theatre or strive to be as hygienic as possible.

Washing and cleaning of clothes, crockery etc that ensures sterilisation be adopted every day during the first year of the crisis.

All waste foods that are not being recycled / composted to be buried in a way that rodents and animals cannot dig them up.

All rodents like squirrels, and scavenging types of wildlife to be eradicated within a 500 yd radius of the home / retreat if possible.

All cesspits to be limed and filled in every two weeks.

All used bandages, dressings, nappies, sanitary products etc must be incinerated.

All water for consumption and personal hygiene MUST be boiled or chemically treated; never assume anything about the quality of water.

All fruit and vegetables must be washed with clean water.

The above suggestions are by no means complete and it’s your own responsibility to ensure that high levels of hygiene are maintained.

An outbreak of flu is inconvenient to you now whilst you are healthy post collapse it will kill your young, your weak and old folk. Imagine what an outbreak of dysentery or gastro enteritis will do to your groups integrity, Measles, Mumps, TB are going to crucify those who don't maintain their health and hygiene protocols.

Please don't forget that post collapse most forms of wildlife will be a risk to your group especially if rabies travels down the channel tunnel. The hairy tailed tree rat (grey squirrel) is as big a disease

carrier as the brown rat, and don't forget feral dogs and cats they will have been feeding of all sorts of unpleasant carrion.

Post collapse most cute furry things are not to be trusted and should be incinerated in April 2014 news articles broke about multiple cases of people contracting TB from pet cats & dogs, can you afford to hunker down in your retreat possibly for many weeks with Fido and Tiddles for company?

I wash my hands after going to the can I shower often, the house is never clean the kitchen is scary and the bathroom I don't want to talk about, I am rarely sick and my doctors have never been able to find anything wrong with me that was not connected to getting older,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,hell I SHOULD HAVE DIED YEARS AGO ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and where the heck would I put all that stuff you have on your list

exactly, you'd need a warehouse to put all that stuff, and anyway the reason people get ill is because they are too clean, you need to get dirty to enable your immune system to start working.

You dont have to have it all, just enough to see you through the initial crisis at leadt, but More than the normal household has, You dont want to be going out looking for bin bags or washing up liquid whilst the streets are still lawless. And then note now where in your area you can buy, salvage or steal more supplies with the lowest risk AFTER TSHTF. I learned directly from my mates in Kansas that huge numbers of Americans bulk buy for themselves often dividing a bulk bought item with neighbours and family members. Hell my mate john had freezers full of Buffalo, Venison that he got from neighbours and his garage was full of bulk bought discounted stuff from Gibsons, Wallmart etc such as unscented bleach, Laundry detergent, anti septic sprays, kitchen roll, toilet paper, bars of soap etc. Obviously you can only cache and store for what space you have available and what your budget allows. I dont think I have ever suggested keeping a life times supply of anything except optimism.
