Living in southern california I am always keeping the lingering threat of earthquakes firmly planted in my mind. I have often wondered the likely hood on some random earthquake setting off the san andreas fault which is many a decade past its proposed "slip"

One of issue I'm facing, my Wife is in Hanford California taking care of her ailing dad, I know in the past Chile and it's surrounding area has had seven 8.0+ in the last 20yrs though this current one is the strongest ever recorded there.

Got off the phone with the Wife, asked her what she knew about the recent EQ, she isn't overly concerned, she also said they had a 9.5 in valdivia 1960 so this one isn't the largest.

No and no, when she got the call she gone straight from the phone to the airport, the daughters were on the phone with her as she was in the air and the girls was packing what she wanted, they overnighted stuff to her dads house.

When it comes to her dad, I let her and the girls handle it. My survivability is greater that way

It looks like she is about 230 miles north of me. Not too much up that way as far as gangs and other criminal elements go.
The Newport Inglewood fault is the one, if memory serves, was the fault that caused the Northridge quake on January 17, 1994 at 4:30 am. It was a magnitude of 6.7.
I was in the city of Costa Mesa, CA (61.8 miles south) at the time, and sound asleep when it struck. It shook the crap out of the house. Luckily the only "damage" was the nerves of my now ex-wife and her parents as we were visiting them at the time.

People around these parts have skewed scientific facts with Hollywood entertainment while others view it as the boy that cried wolf either that or the story of chicken little, in some cases to much government information with Hollywood maximizing on this fear have desensitized the message that was trying to be conveyed.
