I am a refugee from the city, enjoying retirement out in the Cedar breaks of South Texas. I am working on being as self-sufficient as possible. I look forward to learning lots and making new friends on the board.

Wow, what a widely traveled group I fell into. All sorts of fresh perspectives and skillsets to learn. I am retired, so have plenty of time...

Don't you believe it! This country life doesn't leave me much time at all. I garden, take care of Rabbits and Chickens, the dogs, a full canning kitchen and dehydrator. There is always something to do. Winter is deer season and Summer is garden season so there is not much town food out here.

Sometime this week, I get to gather Agaritas and make juice with my new steam juicer and then, if I do it right, Agarita jelly. To those not familiar with that particular bush, imagine picking little 3/8" red berries off what is essentially a cross between a Holly bush and a Cactus. And fight the Rattlesnakes for the priveledge- they like the shade these bushes provide.

Ah, the trials and tribulations of Texas living, but I wouldn't be anywhere else.

Oh, and after crocheting for 50 years, I am learning to knit. Love it! The British soldiers used to knit their own socks.A skillset for all.

I agree. Knitting is great for some things, but I find crocheting a lot more versatile. I am currently crocheting little hats and booties for my niece who will be arriving this fall.

I discovered Circular needles and then on DPNs, I learned to knit backwards so I don't have to turn the work. Makes socks go faster. I still love my crochet. I am making shawls in a Virus Meets Granny pattern and having all sorts of fun. I am also a bead weaver (loom and peyote-gourd) and a jewelry designer. I did a lot more of all that before I started this farm.

When I came out here, the property was undeveloped land. It has been work getting it all together, but it was worth it to get out of town. Maybe you can escape one of these days and come out to God's Country. The quiet is sublime.

I used to have some time. . . Now that seems like a precious commodity. But I would never want to leave my farm. It's a lot of work yet very enjoyable.
