Hi, my name is Alyssa and I'm currently a full-time college student. I found this forum because I'm currently researching a subculture of my choice, which is the Doomsday Preppers. I've always wanted to learn more about the lifestyle and prepping itself so that,I, too can join the community someday. Now my research requires me to interview someone from within the community about the community as a whole and their experiences as a Prepper. If you have a story to tell, please inbox me as soon as you can. Thank you!

I think I'm starting resent the term "subculture". I'm not sure what it means, but I don't like labels.
If you're truly interested in learning about prepping, just spend some time reading through some of the posts here. You might just learn something.
I guess if you have a full pantry of food , first aid supplies , wood burning stove , flash lights, candles, solor panel and a means to defend Your Homestead then Your a subculture .

And all this time.i thought that ment we're free citizen's exorcising our free right to prepare for the wrose.

Self sufficiency is such a foreign concept to so many people now, I guess they think you have to be in some kind of cult to want to learn about it.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my post, that was never my intention. The reason I'm looking for an interview is because it's required of me as a part of my paper. I could read a book on prepping but it wouldn't be the same as learning about what it's like to be an actual member of the community. I referred to this as a subculture is because this is a smaller culture within a culture. I, personally, believe prepping for any disaster of your choice, is a smart decision. I picked prepping as my subject myself because I find this topic fascinating. I may not prep, myself, but I wouldn't be opposed to it in the future if I knew more about what it takes.

Many have come here looking to interview members for school research. Most, if not all have painted an unflattering image of preppers as crazy paranoid fanatics. So thus the not so warm welcome from everyone. I had one little shit say something to the effect that I was a hoarder and didn’t care about other people. The best advice I can give you is the same as mentioned above. Read some of the old posts and get a feel for what most are like here. Sure, there have been some extreme people that have come and gone, but most are just people who like making their own insurance policy for tough times. I doubt you will find any volunteers here to talk directly about prepping though, but wish you well in your persuits.

Preppers are simply people from all walks of life and in many, many countries that understand they are responsible for the well being of themselves and their families. They understand that governments or law enforcement agencies are REACTIVE entities and will not be there, until after there is an event. Preppers plan for being able to fill the gap between the event and the arrival of what ever help may arrive. Preppers do not expect the government to come save them, they will save themselves. We will not be looking for FEMA to provide shelter or food, we will do that our selves. We would really prefer that Law Enforcement agencies could and would provide protection of us and out families but we will are also ready to do that if needed. If being smart enough and wise enough and accountable enough to plan for our own independent futures is a subculture, then I am sorry for the rest of the culture. What we do is not rocket science, it does not require a mass fortune but it does require some common sense and the ability to learn from the past. Modern people need to understand they are not invincible due to their advanced technology but actually in more danger than past civilizations. Preppers of today are not advocating (well maybe a few are) returning to the 18oo but we also are smart enough to understand a large Solar Flare could drop our electrical grid out for years. Tornadoes just killed 23 in Alabama, the surviving folks in that area are going to need food, water, and much more. Want to bet a few sure wish they had some extra food and water on hand. Preppers are NOT the survival idiots painted on TV and in the movies. They are bakers, lawyers, doctors, nurses, EMT's, cops, fathers, sons, mothers, daughters and just about anybody with an I.Q. over 10 and the ability to reason. Preppers are the smart and very self reliant people of every nation and walk of life. Preppers are the people that would rather buy and store extra food, than buy the latest video game. We would rather have better medical kits, than bigger TV's. We want to be free to be self reliant and not have to be fed, clothed and sheltered by the government. It may even surprise you to learn that many are not even conservatives but caring progressive that are simply smart enough to not want to be spoon fed any B.S. They want to be able to stand tall and help their neighbors in times of crisis. There is no single type of prepper. I am an URBAN prepper, many are rural preppers, some are nomadic type preppers. the only common determining type / characteristic is the desire to be self reliant. There you have had your interview.

I am a prepper, and also a published writer.

I live in South Florida, and have been prepping for years.

If I can answer any questions, or go over stuff with you....I hope you'll let me know.

G'day from Down Under - yes, we are world wide.
Preparedness to me is just like an insurance policy - I insure my car, contents, life etc for a rainy day.
Same as being prepared.
You can pm me if you like.

Difference between Prepper and Non-Prepper.

Hurricane comes, knocks out power for a week.

Prepper: Continues living more or less normally, using gas to cook, cooks non-perishable food that doesn't need refrigeration so the freezer and refrigerator don't need to be opened constantly. Cranks up the generator periodically to keep the food from spoiling in the fridge and freezers. Doesn't need to rush to the store to fight the crowds for the last morsels of food and water because he has plenty on hand to get through the aftermath. Doesn't need to drive anywhere so he hangs around the house, helping neighbors cut up downed trees. Keeps an eye out for miscreants and keeps the family safe.

Non-Prepper: Life is turned upside down as he can't do anything without electricity. Food spoils and he can't cook it anyhow because he's all electric. Drives around town looking for stores that have water and non-perishable food until he runs out of gas and then has to abandon his car and walk home. Gets mugged on the way home and his car is stripped.

Moral of the story: Don't be that guy!
