Wonder about the sound reduction quality vs. off the shelf (after tax stamp and a very long wait) suppressor? Any facts to share out there, kind folks?

Not that I've ever had mine on an AR, mine has a titanium adapter by the way, lol, so fancy! The sound from the 10.5 inch barrel firing 5.56 is so loud it's like someone punched you in the ear. Mostly the left, I don't know why.

The solvent trap reduces that to tolerable without plugs or muffs. Still loud. But totally doable without ear protection.

Seriously illegal in Illinois, and never to be mounted on a gun here.

Easy to clean, durable, mine is still a legit fuel filter. I haven't melted off the outer covering. Get the kit for the cups if you go this route vs a manufactured suppressor. The engine freeze plugs can be made to work, but they aren't the best and shift a bit, and the last one takes some massaging to get the length of the stack right, for the end caps to screw down tight. Not enough difference for the amount of hassle.

The cups are machined to be the correct length. Solvent trap fuel cups.

Gotta say, this whole thing is dicey. We actually use these on the farm, or at least have a use for them. It's not at all a strange item to have laying around here.

A suburban home, maybe it's more noticeable? Anyway, they work, but like most things it's not like the movies. Still a gunshot, just a more comfortable one for the shooter.

I should add, I don't have the hawk unit, but mine is identical on the inside, cups and spacers. I don't have the guts with the filter, I'm honestly scared to have it all together.

I'm really hoping that hearing protection act passes. It just a nicer way of shooting.

Currently the one item I'm nervous about owning, and that's a shame.

I hear you (pun intended). The safe hearing act should have passed in 2016. The GOP and the NRA let us down again. Now it will be two more years at least before we get anything done.

Careful with your language. A "solvent trap" doesn't have a hole all the way through. You could say it is a 90% suppressor. Once you punch that hole through, it is a suppressor and if you think you are fooling the ATF, you are an idiot.

If I could get a suppressor that was as quite as in the movies, I would be thrilled, and willing to pay the tax and deal with the wait. To get a suppressor that takes the sound from extremely loud to just barely hearing safe, is not worth the trouble. Home made is doable, with subsonic ammo. Once I move out to the boondocks, then I can play with designs. To risky to test at the local range. :D:ar15:

I meant a bull barrel.

We don't even have to talk about it. Just look at it.

I do nice work, if I do say so myself.

Yep. A bull barrel Ruger mk II. No big deal. No discussion necessary.

Needs the blueing touched up...

I made and welded in that front sight in about 15 minutes, and only had to tap it once to be on at 15 yrds.

Someone shot it a couple weeks ago, and instantly turned and looked at me with a big grin lol.

I would really like to have a suppressor,,,,,,,,,,but 2 things stop me the long wait and the cost,,,

you can use a oil filter with the right adapter but they don't last long and a lot of crap blows back into your action,,,I tried it and it's not worth the trouble

as for the maglight conversion kit with freeze plugs, point of impact is affected to much for my taste and I have abandoned that idea,,,,so unless the permit becomes a thing of the past,,,I will not have a working suppressor

I have looked at the 300 Blackout due to it's subsonic cartridges. It is still a possibility but not sure. UPDATE --- More research completed, subsonic 300 blackout is a no go. Too many failures to expand.

I know there are a number of folks on here that will see it differently than me,,,,,but if I am going to use a 300 Blackout for self defense I want the high powered rounds ,,,guns are loud so you aren't going to hide the fact that you just fired your rifle so why not get maximum damage inflicted
