I don't know, I've always been told that even if the safe doesn't catch fire, the temperatures inside of it can cause papers and the like to ignite.

I would like some ideas of how to hide a small safe that I inherited. Finally got it open, not sure if it can be bolted. I can lift it a little and scoot it around but carrying it much of a distance would be a challenge. Currently it is in the garage empty. How would I hide something that is really heavy and is approximately 16-18 inches wide and about 20 inches tall. I haven't measured, just a wild guess. Also, I need it accessible. A fake floor drain would work but this has to be easy to do and inexpensive. I thought about a wooden apple type crate full of old rags and have the crate open in front with a hinge. True rags would fall out all over but that is easy to pick up. A garbage can with the bottom cut out?
I am also considering using a one gallon paint can and storing ammo in it,(have the can ready) but I haven't come up with a good way to label it so no one would know what it is. Not like I can label it "Color 9 mm" or "Shotgun Shell Red".
I am always trying to think of a container of something that no one would want. Who else has ideas on homemade diversion safes?

I keep dog food in a 30 gallon plastic barrel ,,,,,,,,,,,as long as the item you want hidden is small put it in a zip lock bag and bury it in the feed,,,,,,,,,,,no one will look at the barrel more than once
That's a good one. My Aunt once had 17 thousand dollars in the bottom of a barrel of goat feed once.

Considering use of a galvanized garbage can(the nastier the better), cut the bottom out, put it over the safe, place a round of wood over the safe and insert a black garbage bag and just use it for trash or fill it with rags. Will have to see how it looks and if it will fit. I like the ideas so far.

I'm a big fan of hiding things underground.

I've hidden silver and gold coins by putting them in a canning jar, putting in silica gel, and using a plastic lid.

What I then do is cover the entire lid and upper quarter of the jar in Flex Seal (a kind of artificial liquid rubber available at Walmart), and let it cure per the directions.

I then bury my treasure in an inconspicuous place.

Scattering a bunch of nails and screws in a wide area over the burial site will confound an amatuer with a metal detector, but it probably won't deter a professional...as high-end metal detectors--combined with professional training--will enable them to fine-tune the reception of the detector and exclude certian readings.

I buried a black powder single action revolver with a conversion cylinder and Cowboy .44 ammo in this way.

Read "The Purloined Letter" by Edgar Allen Poe.

I have and Poe is one of my favorite authors. Having eliminated all the probable hiding spots, look for the improbable hiding spot. The true key is to not have anybody looking for it. If nobody is looking for a safe, then hiding a safe is much easier. ,

I would fill the black garbage bag with fertilizer / fresh pet droppings, etc.. One whiff and the search heads in a different direction. Nobody is digging in that, to see if something maybe hidden.

I looked up instructions on making a security can, cutting the bottom off with a safety opener, and how to put a screw bottom on, etc. Here is where I found it, I think I will give it a try.

I used to see them in stores. I’m sure there are still cheap options on line. I remember seeing shaving cream, cleaning agents, and a few other non conspicuous mini safes.

I am a fan of hide in plain sight. I have enough trouble remembering where I left my keys, much less where I buried the good stuff.
Lol. I just found a 9mm I hid in the kitchen behind some recipe books. I was wondering where the damned thing was for two days when it came to me in a flash earlier today! I guess it wouldn’t have done much good if I forgot where it was so it’s back to under the mattress again.
